Roots Cafe is a Christian library and gluten-free cafe, which would come as a surprise to you if you checked its Google Maps... description and the "About" section on its website --which do not mention the Christian library or gluten-free menu --before youdecided to go there. Accordingly, you would be surprised if you ordered a bagel and received a piece of gluten-free bread with ahole in it, and you would likely regret that you hadn't had that info and ordered a crepe instead. If you would like to borrowa Christian book and/or have a variety of gluten-free options, this may be a great fit for you! However, if you or someone inyour party uses a wheelchair or walker, this will not be a good fit. It's quite unusual to find a sidewalk that doesn't have acurb ramp these days and, for a business that's been open for 4+ years, one would have to assume that's intentional at the RootsCafe, which strikes me as being not what Jesus would do. Coffee was weak and lukewarm. Read more

My third visit while I travel through Maine. Love that I can eat in a totally gluten free establishment where the food is truly... awesome!! So by and enjoy a cup of coffee, and an egg sandwich on a Canyon Bakehouse bread or wonderful muffin or scone forbreakfast. Stop by for lunch and have a panini and cookie or cupcake. You can't go wrong, no matter what you choose!! The staffis very attentive even during the busiest of times. Thank you, Roots Cafe, for a fabulous place to stop on my journey. Read more

My favorite place in town for a coffee and a bite to eat. The best part of all, EVERYTHING is gluten free and delicious. Beware... of the pastry case, it's hard to pass without adding a little something sweet to your order lol Read more

I loved that all options are gluten free. However they got a coffee order wrong and l we waited nearly an hour for 2 cold... sandwiches, an avocado toast and a salad. Just as we were ready to complain and leave... We noticed our food on the counter. Weweren't called nor was it brought to the table. Unfortunately, the food's taste did not compensate for the time waiting. Read more

It?s not too often that I?ll fall in love with a place so much that I write a review before I even leave, but this spot has done... that for me! It?s a fluke that I ended up here, driving 20 minutes out of my way, because after being in downtown Portland foran appointment, I was excited to try a new place for breakfast. Upon walking a few blocks, I finally found a business whose?masks mandated? sign said it was due to the city of Portland requiring it... again. OK, looks like I?ve got to get out of thecity because I don?t spend my money at businesses that push their misguided ?health? ideals upon me. I did a quick search inWestbrook, and Roots was one of the first cafes to pop up. Lucky me! Not only do they let us be free to share positive vibes bySMILING at each other, they serve only organic coffees, make their food from scratch, and all their pastries are gluten free forthose who need it. It?s a nicely designed, somewhat large cafe, which seems to be associated with a church next door, but Idon?t mind that, even though I?m not religious myself. They?re all about spreading love here! Even their salt and pepper shakersdo! I will gladly come out of my way again to visit Roots when coming to the Portland area! Read more

My daughter, who has Celiac Disease, breathed a sigh of relief just walking into Roots Cafe. She was SO happy to have a place... where she can eat ANYTHING on the menu - plus you can't even tell that the food is GF - SO DELICIOUS! ???? ? ????- We came infor breakfast 2 mornings in a row while we were in town. The place is so clean, and love all the wood and decor of this place. Wish they had a Roots Cafe in Chicago! Read more
