Reviews for The Grenadier Cafe in Toronto, ON
Comfortable spot nestled inside high park. Food was served quickly, coffee is mediocre but good. My Turkey bacon could?ve been... cooked a bit longer but that?s a personal preference. No complaints and also nothing to rave about either. If you don?t feel upto cooking at home I would recommend getting out and dining for breakfast. Read more
Fare is family friendly and offers common diner style choices. They have a take out area with some indoor and outdoor seating,... and a dine-in with a sit down menu and table service. The patios are lovely quiet spaces with lots of shade and trees. Thisreview focuses on the take-out menu. If you want the dine in service enter the restaurant and walk toward the patio door wheresomeone will seat you. Prices are higher and Dine-in service ends at 6pm. This section covers take out. Dine-in dishes arefurther down: The fries ($6.99) are great - crispy and thick cut, with a natural sweetness. We always enjoy them with a side ofgravy ($1.49) - it?s not exactly home style gravy but tasty. The chicken burger ($8.99) is okay. It?s definitely an industrialpatty, but with a nice crispy outer coating. It costs extra to get cheese ($1.75) and bacon ($2), but the burger would be toobland without them. The rice pudding ($4.99) definitely tends toward North American sweet, but it has a nice texture and justthe right amount of plump raisins. This entire meal with a Diet Pepsi was $33.90. A bit pricy but I imagine the rent they paythe park is outrageously high. For dine-in: The steak sandwich is very good! Cooked right to order (medium, next time I?ll gomedium-rare) with freshly cooked mushrooms. Tasty and tender! Best thing we?ve had there so far. The Caesar (3.49 for aside)salad has bottled sauce and store bought croutons, but still manages to be nice. Definitely ask for extra parm on theside. The cheese and bacon burger (16.49) is NOT worth the price point. A frozen industrial patty. It?s a cozy, simpleexperience. A lovely way to enjoy beautiful weather. If you?re tired of meeting friends at restaurants and cafes you?ll findthis a lovely alternative, plus you can walk into the park with your meal and enjoy it in a number of settings (just don?t leavegarbage behind). Or come here on your own with a book, it?s the perfect setting for it. I tend to hit the trai Read more
I think it?s more $$ than $. A limited menu compared to the ones posted when I went, self service. The food is done quickly and... there?s plenty space to sit inside or outside on the patio under the table umbrellas. Had the beef burger with fries, it wasgood. Think wouldn?t have minded a sub-$5 smaller order of fries. It?s convenient for your day in the park. Read more
I'm usually not a fan of restaurants inside attractions because they tend to be overrated and overpriced. Fortunately, eating... here was a pleasant experience. The food is not too expensive and I got my money's worth. The cheese burger was soft and tenderand I got more fries than I could eat. I saw another review complaining about the lights indoors. Yeah it's a bit dim lit, but Iprefer it this way so it's actually a plus for me. However, someone needs to checkup on the bathroom stalls because they'repretty nasty.. Read more
It's a perfect day to visit to the park, and where better to go in TO than High Park? Friend of mine recommended Grenadier Cafe,... conveniently located in the heart of High Park. I still recollect the long queues to enter the cafe during Spring cherryblossoms years back. Today in the Fall it was less crowded, and the cars filling parking spaces came and went. Once seated, Iwas initially impressed that our food orders came quickly. I had the Eggs Benedict, while others ordered the typical breakfastfare and their signature salad. I was told those were decent but my plate was a disappointment. For a standard dish, I wassurprised to crunch on multiple pieces of egg shells which is really quite unacceptable. Perhaps attention to detail in thekitchen would've helped instead of rushing plates to the table? The patio looked nice but we picked a table indoors for thekids with the cooler weather. The restaurant interior was very dimly lit though our table by the window had some sunlight so wedidn't eat blindfolded. Note there's two seating areas, one with self-serve counter and one with service further back. Ourserver was quite attentive and came around routinely to refill our coffee, which was appreciated. Maybe we'll give it anotherchance. Read more
For the past FIFTY years or so the Grenadier Restaurant has been an excellent historic venue situated in the centre of one of... the spectacular urban oases you could ever imagine. Thank you so much to the Grenadier Group who took over ownership in themid-1980's for maintaining the huge "tree" in the front servery as the restaurant's tribute to its location in High Park. Themenu prices have, understandably, gone up in the past few years but considering the magnificent location and the good food thisshould be quite acceptable. There is a large outside patio for the cheaper TAKE-AWAY from the servery as well as a lovely shadeddeck area for the more expensive DINING ROOM. Meeting a group of my mature (....and not OLD) friends from our local high schoolour early group tasted a couple of raspberry and blueberry scones ($3). Although a tad dry they were very tasty and washed downwith copious amounts of excellent bottomless cups of coffee ($2.50) attended to constantly by our cheerful, very friendly, andextremely attentive and efficient servers. SHOUT-OUTS AND THANKS TO YOU ALL!!!! There are ALL-DAY BREAKFAST as well as lunchselections and we settled for a bit of both. The EGGS BENEDICT ($16) were nicely poached and covered in tasty Hollandaise sauce. The GREEK SALAD ($15) seemed a bit pricey for a salad but it was a proper Greek style, which is hard to find in Toronto. TheGRILLED CHICKEN SANDWICH ($17.50) was tender and complemented by a fresh focaccia bun. The CHEESE and BACON BURGER ($16.50)started well but then I realized the star of the show was the thick and meaty strips of bacon and not the burger patty. Thatturned out to be a somewhat bland and pre-formed affair and not prepared in-house as I had remembered from before. No beer, wineor booze thanks to John Howard who deeded his farmland to the City of Toronto in 1873 on the condition that alcohol would NEVERbe served. On the positive side, it does keep you tab reasonable !!! Read more
Very nice location to have a meal or just enjoy a coffee in the outside patio surrounded by the park. Coffee was great and... grilled cheese+bacon, delicious! If you like, order the rice pudding, so good! Kudos to the handsome guy in the cashier that wasgoing beyond to get things moving and making sure kitchen guys (a bit slow) could keep up with orders. Definitely a place toenjoy! Read more
Tucked inside High Park, on a relatively large property, the cafe looked interesting, Though we wanted to sit at the Patio, we... chose to go indoors as there were many wasps all around the tables and were dangerously oblivious to any human threat!!! Oncewe stepped inside, like all Canadian old restaurants, it smelt of cockroaches ???? and the fake trees with fake autumn leaveswere reminiscent of restaurants shown in the movies of the '70's ???? There weren't too many people and we chose to havecoffee and some Muffins ( carrot) and cranberry scones. Both seemed old and dry. My suggestions don't visit the place after aweek end, may be the bakery section would be stale. The interesting part was the old photo gallery on the walls, depicting HighPark and Sunny Side area from the 1900's onwards. The pictures were fascinating and made the trip worth it. I found the placelittle pricey for the quality of food they were providing. Read more
