We went to portobello café Tuesday, September 27 to celebrate my birthday, our server was David and he was wonderful! He... recommended the special for $55 a person and it was more than worth it especially that the beer wine and sangria was included.He was absolutely right, In suggesting the special. I have been coming here for years! A few years back I was worried they were going downhill. Not anymore!!!! My second time... back in a month. Amazing lunch specials! Especially today. International Day! Had the blackened shrimp salad and it was todie for! My Aunt had the chicken parm. Also out of this world! Generous servings of fresh bread for dipping. Don't normally post on dining experiences however I want to say thank you to our server and bartender who made our dining... experience awesome this past Sunday August 28th. 6 adults and 5 kids between 1-8 years old in a Restaurant is tough. I had high expectations of this place since I pass by all the time and wanting to try their food. So for starters, you can tell... that the Rock shrimp ???? and calamari were frozen food and both were so tiny. Rock shrimp wasn?t even ?rock? shrimp. Calamariwere so dry :( Also, the reason I wanted to try this place is because they have fried avocado which was breaded, weren?t crispysome of the avocado were brown which was old :(. The only thing I liked about this place was the baked clam and skirt steak ithas Lots of veggies and skirt steak were tasty and the rice that came with it were good too. We were seated in the dark room:/ Maybe more like a private room of theirs? they were doing some things for a bit right behind where we were seated and whileeating which I didn?t like cuz of the dusts that might get into our food :( The service were okay. Food is so delightful We order so much that we get the to go containers as we are ordering/eating! Lol.. the wait Staff/... Manager are great. Although, I do think there should be a Dress CODE FOR ALL EMPLOYEES. The atmosphere is intended to be classyand one can ruin it for all. Sorry. So that is my one complaint! Ok, I love Italian food especially on Staten Island. I can easily say that this place is one of my favorites. Not only is the... food great, but the prices are great too. My usual go to meal from Italian is usually pasta, and I?ve tried just about all oftheir pasta dishes, my favorite of course is the Sunday dinner which is loaded with meats, you?ll probably have a whole plate totake home still. Also, make sure to ask about the roasted garlic, it spreads on your bread like butter, it is absolutely to killfor if you?re a garlic lover like myself. Also great staff and atmosphere. Long wait - 30min for coke and appetizer 1 hour for the main dish. The check was given with a wrong amount twice $15... difference Pork chops are good. Salmon is OK, but the side is not Kids menu chicken parmajan pasta is huge. If 2 of you arecoming for happy hour - both of you have to order it or nobody. Also they have 4% overcharge for credit cards. It is written,but nobody will tell you. So. Check your receipt twice. Make sure you have cash with you. And be ready to wait for about anhour to have your order ready. ------------------------------------------- Update. Since the owner replied to me. 1. Iunderstand that cooking a good piece of pork takes time. If it takes 1,5 hours (which looks a little bit weird for me - but I amnot a professional cook) - let the guest know. I was unaware of this. And the place was not occupied - only 2 tables (4 people)besides us. So this wait is not because of the crowd. 2. If you tell the guest over the phone that you have credit cardovercharge, right? Why don't you tell it to the walk in guests at the time of checkout? 3. When I asked about the wrong pricefor the happy hour in the check - I was told that it is $30, not $25. When I replied on that asking to bring the menu - theperson told me that she will double check. (I don't want to give you her name like you asked me - 'cos I don't want anybody toloose job because of me) 4. I am not discussing the price of food - that is your business - and you know what price should be.Related to the happy hour menu for all of the guests - I just wanted your visitors to be ready for it. I am not telling if it isright or wrong. 5. To be honest, the rice under the salmon was disgusting. Try it, ask someone else to try it. Great spot for a great meal in Great Kills. The only negative is on street parking only which can be an issue, but for this out... of town guy, I bet New Yorkers know how to deal with that. Awesome service team, efficient, friendly and knowledgeable. Nicevaried menu, had stuffed pork chop, delicious, tasted a few other dishes, all well prepared served hot and tasty.
