Reviews for Harbor Fish & Chips in San Jose, CA
Fish and fried zucchini, good for a little hole in the wall place. Mom (95) was snacking on hers on the car ride home ????
Okay, this review is complicated because I?m trying to be as objective as I can, but let me start by saying that even on a bad... day, I prefer Harbor Fish & Chips to anyone else I have tried in the Bay Area, and therefore I give it 5 stars. That?s not tosay the place is perfect but I?ll explain later. Not gonna lie but we have been disappointed with Harbor Fish & Chips, HFC,like everyone else is saying recently and so in the past few years we have tried two places in the Saratoga Prospect Rd area, one place on Meridian and Willow, two places in Downtown San Jose, 1 place on Story & White Rd, and even a shop in Bodega Bay.Not very extensive tries I know but I?ve had to pay over $25 for a simple two piece fish and chips at these shops and all ofthem had the same problem. You take a bite and your mouth is flooded with oil despite all of them looking absolutely amazing. Wecan take a little grease no problem but all had issues beyond a little grease filled bite. Lack of flavor in the batter despiteits glamorous appearance. ALL FISH & CHIPS SHOULD TASTE GOOD BEFORE ADDING CONDIMENTS. Having been so disappointed weconcluded that we should try HFC again and eat earlier in the day (when the fryer has had plenty of time to reach propertemperature - meaning it cooks hotter and faster without flooding the mouth with oil) and when it?s not busy. Why? We havelearned that HFC is better before the crowds come in, the restaurant is cleaner and better maintained and more pleasant to sitand eat in. The owner (a senior) has more energy earlier in the day and pretty much is done after 7pm, and even more so when theplace is humming, so don?t waste your time in those cases. We noticed after the pandemic that HFC has watered down their tartarsauce and they no longer have napkins at the table, which has us bringing our own ketchup and tartar sauce and requestingnapkins when we get our food. We also have to remind the owner to salt our fish and chips straight from the fryer so Read more
The service was good, friendly folks but the food was just ok. I ordered fish shrimp and chips combo and a side of onion rings.... Unfortunately it was too greasy and under seasoned. Read more
Nasty food, nasty people, nasty place. The tarter sauce was very milky and runny and when I asked him for another one he just... said their all the same. And he was all dirty looking he had some white stuff hanging off the sides of his mouth and this wasthe owner. Read more
This place used to be called H. Salt but they changed their name for some reason. I once went to H salt and got really greasy... mushy fish. This place is not like that. The fish is firm and the batter is crunchy. Read more
Fish and chips were great. Very hot and crispy. My girlfriend also enjoyed the calamari. The one piece 5.95 fish and chips is a... pretty good deal if you're not super hungry. Will return in the future. Read more
So good! I go here at least once a month. Walk in, order, 10 minutes later walk out with some amazing fried fish. I've also... tried the shrimp and the onion rings...also good but I always go back to the fish. Staff is nice. Lots of parking in the stripmall lot. Read more
The checkout kiosk was filthy. It had so much filth caked on that there were visible filth craters where the screen was touched... frequently. When I complained, the guy wiped it down with hand sanitizer and his bare hands, then went directly to the bag offrozen fries and scooped them out with the same bare hands without washing them first. I didn't bother waiting for him to finishthe order, I just walked out. Read more
