My husband and I stopped in for dinner and the staff was super friendly and helpful. We had a glass of wine while we looked at... the menu and ordered a pizza to go (which was absolutely delicious). We asked if we could run an errand while they cooked it,which they accommodated happily. When we got back they met us at the door with our pizza and we were on our way! We reserved a table here for our family of six to celebrate our daughter's birthday. The availability of gluten free pasta and... pizza was why we chose this restaurant. The authentic Italian menu was a pleasant surprise. Between us, we ordered the Caesarsalad (the least favorite item we ordered), the Exotica salad with perfectly cooked salmon (dressing was delicious), the friedcalamari, garlic focaccia and gluten free focaccia, pizza, pappardelle and gluten free pasta (both with pink vodka sauce).Everything was outstanding, including the attentive service. Amazing Authentic Italian! The lasagna was the best I have ever had. Light and not heavy, sauce was so good with huge depth,... noodles melted in my mouth, and the cheese was so good! A+ all around . Highly recommend this place for fresh, clean authentic Italian food. The owners served us and shared that they are from Roma.... The pasta was made fresh that morning. I searched over 15 Italian food restaurants in San Diego and landed on this one becauseof the quality of the food in the pictures. My assumptions were correct and I was thrilled with the vodka sauce and spinachricotta ravioli. The food is southern Italian style and the focaccia is more of a flatbread style as opposed to the fluffy oilyfocaccia. We ordered the gluten-free flatbread just to try it although we eat gluten. The Caesar salad was clean and fresh withthe perfect amount of freshly grated Parmesan. It is centrally located and we walked to downtown Hillcrest for gelatoafterwards. The food was amazing, and quickly put this place extremely high on my list of favorite Italian restaurants. I take my Italian... food very seriously, and the night I went the pasta was cooked to perfection. So many restaurants butcher their pasta byovercooking it and serving mush. It always pleases me to find a place where it's done right, and La Taverna does it right. Theservice was fantastic as well, and the wine recommendation went perfectly with my food and has since become my second favoritewine. Bonus points as far as I'm concerned.
