Reviews for ARLO in San Diego, CA
I was staying at the hotel and while at a conference an employee was getting people to sign up for dinner reservations so I... thought I would give it a try. It?s beautiful with plenty of seating. It took over 10 minute for anyone to even talk to me. Tookanother 10-15 to get my drink. I ordered the vegetarian dinner and it was tasty and literally the biggest chunk of broccoli Ihad ever seen. I finished my drink and dinner and was hoping to have another drink but literally couldn?t get any one?sattention. I finally flagged down my server and asked for a dessert menu. Ordered the feeder to go, but they brought it not togo so I quickly ate it at the table. Took forever to get my check. The service was abysmal for the price of the food. If youare on site I would skip it, there are a ton of places in the area that would take better care of you. I don?t often recommendskipping some place but unless you have a couple of hours to spend waiting on things than you would do better to look elsewhere. The food was good, hence the three stars?but the service and wait times we terrible. Great atmosphere, service and also delicious food, although a little bit too heavy on the meats and not enough veggies in my... opinion. The cocktails are well done and generous! The picture is the Maple Leaf Duck. Read more
It is more like 3.5 stars. Great service and vibe. Beautiful mid-century decor. I enjoyed drinks and dessert, not so much the... entrees. We had pork tenderloin, ribeye, and halibut. Pork and fish were dry. The medium rare ribeye was more like medium well. Read more
The place is marvelous, and the waiters are really nice. The food is allright, I don't think the flavor is as good for the... price. I was here for new years, it was a mess: appetizers were in a buffet kind of thing, but the dishes were missing thecreams or panna cotta the menu said. We had to ask for them, and it would take forever for us to get served suchadditions. 3/5. Read more
I wanted to like this place, but there were some challenges with our meal. Service/Front of House: the restaurant is vast and... poorly designed. The kitchen and bar area is at the farthest end of the restaurant, opposite from most guests. The staff flow isinefficient. Every time they: clear a table, need to grab drinks, check your order, bring out food, etc. They have to walk tothe farthest end of the restaurant. It seems like every staff member also bus tables and is a food runner. This results in: Thestaff was so busy that it took 20 minutes even to acknowledge us at our table. -30 minutes before we got any water -45 minutesbefore I got my glass of wine - over an hour before I received my first course, and unfortunately, it wasn't the bread I orderedthat didn't come until 20 minutes later. Food was inventive but not perfect. Some things were was just for the sake of beingcreative but did not work well. The Pulpo and passion fruit Panna Cotta is a good example. The Pulpo was cooked well, but thepassion fruit Panna Cotta was incredibly tart and paired horribly. The maple halibut, Arlo, ran out of halibut, so theysubstituted it with salmon. The salmon was extremely fishy. Lamb meatballs were delicious. Also, the veal belly was cooked welland very tender. For dessert, the smoked dulce de leche creme brulee presented beautifully, and s'mores cheesecake wasdecadent. I appreciate what they are attempting to do at Arlo; their menu is inventive and not the typical bland contemporaryAmerican fare you get at most resort restaurants. They have a lot of work to do, especially in the front of house. I am willingto try them out again several months to see if they can change my mind from my initial review. Read more
Arlo was not what I was expecting. They completely redid the town and country hotel into a beautiful property. I was invited... last minute with a group of my friends. I had never even heard of Arlo which surprised me because I?m pretty in tune with theSan Diego food and wine scene. Interior decor and ambience was pretty. The food was very tasty and beautiful. My only twocriticisms are a very weak wine menu and slow service. The service I can understand because no one can find help right now, especially in the restaurant industry. So chances are Arlo is not fully staffed. I felt like they were doing the best with whatthey had to work with as far as employees. The wine list however was pretty rough. Nothing special, nothing allocated, and thehighest price bottle was some Napa current vintage cab. With this caliber of food I would?ve expected a two or three page listwith wines from all over the world. Some allocated and cool stuff would?ve been fun to pair. Regardless, the food wasoutstanding and the server assured me that they were working on the wine list. I almost gave four stars just because the winelist, but I was so impressed by the food. I will be back. And hopefully I?ll be able to buy some great wine. Read more
