We go there every year for Thanksgiving… this year it seems to have gone down hill a lot. The green beans were raw, hard as... wood, the turkey white meat? What the hell were those hard bits in it? Felt like knuckles in my mouth? The bartender? Made methe wrong drink and then told me the drink I’d ordered wasn’t ‘ on the menu’ even though they’d taken my order, thenmade the wrong drink! GREAT, AWESOME, French Cuisine. Lavender our Waitress and Gina the Manager just made it a date night with my wife to remember... forever. Great Layout, Great Menu. I met the Chef and gave him my compliments. I was even surprised by running into OsheaJackson Jr. there. There's just nothing more for me to say but that. Max's is nice enough, but when you have a ton of nice enough options like we do here in Richmond, you expect a little bit better... than what we got on our most recent trip here. I booked a dinner reservation for my parents and me to celebrate a birthday. Wearrived early (a first for us!) and were told they couldn't seat us yet. Totally understand! So we went to the bar, where weproceeded to sit and be ignored by the bartender for 15 minutes. There were 3 other groups of folks there who all had drinks,and the bartender wasn't so busy that he couldn't engage in a 5 minute conversation with another guest. Disappointing start tothe evening, but I know it's tough to balance tending bar and making sure customers are happy. Once we got to our seats, my momand I ordered a glass each of the same draught beer, and dad ordered a wheat beer. When the hostess came back, she let us knowthat the keg had kicked so we could only get one of the two glasses we ordered, and she also brought the wrong beer for my dad.She seemed irritated (fair enough; sounded like things had been hectic before we arrived), went downstairs, then reported backthat they were out of the wheat beer, too. Oof. Replacement drinks were found, and again, not the worst situation ever butdefinitely disappointing. The food we ordered arrived as expected, and was very quick especially considering every person onstaff we spoke to mentioned that the kitchen was "slammed." We each got what we ordered, but dad's steak was not terribly tasty,and it wasn't cooked as he wanted. We considered sending it back but at that point I think we were ready to get through the mealand onto dessert. Mom got the braised short ribs and I got the pear and goat cheese salad, which were both fine. Desserts wereokay, not great. The shining aspect of the entire experience was our server, Lavender. Average entree is $35. Got the short ribs which was well softened and delicous. The puree that came under it still had some... chunks of potatoes and was not seasoned enough. The grilled chicken was an all time favorite, just excellent chicken stockbourderlaise. We we serve a tiny amount of water and werr only refilled when asking, after the meal. No physical menus. Such a lovely place, great for date night. Second floor is very private and quiet, which I was looking for. Started off with... fried oysters, which were fresh and prepared very tasty. Also had Max's poutine, loaded french fries, which was nice, but I'mnot huge fan of that dish. I had their special of the night, which was recommended by server, chimichuri steak with mashedpotatoes and veggies, such a great combination of flavours, I really enjoyed it. Shrimp & grits was also a great presentation,with nice soury kick. Server was easy going, with a lot of knowledge! Since it was special night for fiance and me, we gotchampagne on the house. Fantastic. Just moved to Jackson Ward and am still eating my way through, this place is a gem. We were able to get a table by... the bar on a Friday night, without reservations for the two of us. Great service, delicious cocktails, ambiance is cozy, detailsare thoughtful, and just amazing food. Was just really special to experience something refined just a walk away from my houseand it made our Valentine weekend so special. Read more
