Reviews for Zagol Ethiopian Restaurant in Reno, NV
I was a new costumer, so I was curious about her menu and decided to ask, when I asked if she served fufu, and the lady... completely yelled at me for my question and hung with out a chance to explain myself that it was the first time I?ve called. Ifelt so bad ?. Read more
This restaurant had nice ambiance and courteous staff. However, this was the worst Ethiopian food I've ever had AND the most... expensive. The menu combinations were not good. I have eaten at dozens of Ethiopian restaurants from Seattle to Miami toNYC to San Diego. The cities of Berkekey and Oakland near where I work, have at least 15 Ethiopian restaurants each. Maybe thelack of competition in Reno is an issue. A vegetarian combination plate in expensive California is 15-17. At Zagol--$30. And,2 of the only 3 veg items are lentils cooked till they are the consistency of gerbers baby food. The meat combination was $50! In high cost California that would be $16-22. The injera and presentation was good. I hate to give a bad review, but it ismerited. When I arrived on a Friday at 6:30 and there was only 1 other person, I should have gone with my instincts. Bold colors, artistic tapestries, masks, hand-woven pieces and baskets, various pictures depicting people and places unknown,... and the sounds and visuals of traditional music and festive, energetic videos in the background all add to the decor andfeeling of visiting the chefs own home for a meal prepared just for you. From the kitchen close by the aromas and sounds areboth inviting and intoxicating, this heightening the anticipation of your meals arrival. When it does, time-tested and honoredingredients and spices meld together to create magic. Simple, yet complex at the same time. Where else can you scoop up eachsavory morsel with your original utensil, just like all our ancestors did, then eat the "plate" the meal sits on ???? If youhaven't had this particular cuisine from Africa, don't hesitate to dig right in, literally. The Meat and Vegetarian Gebetaallows you to sample different dishes if you can't decide on any particular one selection; don't pass on trying the spiced teaas well. Read more
Husband and I first tried Ethiopian when Zygol was located downtown. I was very excited for the experience. He was not impressed... but I enjoyed it. Tasty food but the glasses were dirty. Which I thought was weird since we were the only patrons in therestaurant at the time. So I asked for a new glass of water and she came back with another dirty glass..fine I just pushed itaside. Tried her restaurant at the new location here in 2020 when I know they're struggling and same story years later. Dirty.Glasses. By dirty I mean visibly unclean, scuffs on the outside and small black things in and on the glass..so I dunno what's upwith all the dirty beverage glasses but nevertheless the owner's food is good and I try to support. Last visit I madereservations for a large group of 6 or more friends from out of town to try as well but many had unfortunately canceled lastminute and when I told the owner she was noticeably upset. I decided to order because I felt bad and actually did like her foodbut she huffed and puffed saying she didn't have the beef wat which was arguably one of the best menu items. Menu is stillconfusing to understand and could be redone for simplicity sake. I ended up being glad my friends who cancelled didn't go.Disappointed in overall service over the years -2 for service, price and portion size but if you can get past that her food isactually good. Kicking myself for not checking out this place sooner. It's now listed with my favorite restaurants in Reno. The food is... delicious, and just the right portion. I look forward to trying everything on the menu. I'd also like to some day check out thecoffee ceremony. The honey wine is amazing: I don't like many sweet wines but this was fantastic (it's not overly sweet). Theservice was exceptionally friendly and sweet. I look forward to getting to know them better. PS These collards are better thanmost I've had in the South, and I thought nobody could do collards better than the South. PSS My fiancé isn't a huge fan oflamb, but she tried this and said she'll definitely start eating it more if it tastes this good. Read more
