Reviews for Kauboi Izakaya in Reno, NV
This place has amazing food! Most of the plates seemed to be tapas the chicken Yakitori was topped with wasabi green onions that... were out of this world. The short rib with the Fresno-miso sauce was very creative and paired amazing with the asparagus. However as hard as the kitchen works the service was abysmally slow. Over 20 minutes to get the check, no drink refills, andthey certainly didn't check back to see if we liked our food, I thought this was kind of strange since they didn't appear to bethat busy. No desserts on the menu, and the cocktails were pricey compared to what you can get from the bars nearby. Read more

Didn't have a bad dish here. There was something for everyone in our party and I love being able to taste a variety of small... dishes. The cedar wrapped short ribs are a must. Read more
High Cost Excellent Food Ok food portions Excellent service and staff Good atmosphere When we arrived, we were told that the... wait would be about 30mins. The hostess, listened to us with consideration, and was excellent at handling multiple tasks atonce. We sat outside to wait, and had drinks served to us as we did. We had the pleasure of sitting at the bar across from thegrill, which was in its own right fun to watch. Our waitress was pleasant and knowledgeable, and very punctual to our table, wenever felt left out or wanting. Our food was fantastic, the wagyu beef(i forgot to take a picture before we consumed it all) wasjuicy and soft, melting in the mouth, the shrimp shittake so good and not over fried, and everything was worth the wait, whichdid take a long time another half hour our so. The music and atmosphere felt modern and mellow, low lights that faded at dusk,to the general western open concept with a japanese undertone, presenting like a bistro or steak house. We had a blast, this isdefinitely a place to go for a first date or for celebrations. Read more
Amazing food! I mean amazing! Cool ambiance, if not the music was quite loud... No desserts, but plenty of delicious options to... fill up on. Would definitely highly recommend and planning to return again soon in the future. Don't miss this one, very wellworth it. Read more
This is an excellent place if you are young and thus not likely to have developed a discriminating taste, probably love having... loud music played during dinner, and hopefully have a lot of cash you're willing to burn. Definitely the place for you then. I tried the vegetarian ramen. It had a subtle earthy flavor and that was about it. The so-called flavor bomb added noflavor whatsoever that I could detect. It seemed to be butter, perhaps , with some herbs in it. The ramen itself was not bad, though for a comparable price, you will get a larger serving at Minato. The meager amount of wine was roughly 1/5 of a glassand cost $8. The font on the menu while interesting was also difficult to read in the very low light. Fun tip: You can useyour cell phone to light up the menu, which when you think about it, is kind of ridiculous. Anyway, this is a cool lookingplace with a nice serving staff, but they've got a lot more work to do on the ramen in order to impress those of us who haveeaten ramen in Reno for a while now. Do NOT go for the Ramen, but the other stuff may be ok to try. It is an Izakaya restaurant after all. Regardless, the ramen not... only took well over 1-2 hours to get, it was really REALLY bland. We even had a reservation and waited outside for 45 minutesbefore entering and ordering. The spicy ramen wasn't very spicy, chicken felt like it was just pulled off of a rotisserie andthrown in, not even cut, noodles were doughy and way too chewy, broth did not taste miso'y. To be frank, I could have made myown ramen for a lot less and it would have tasted miles better. The other conceptual food was interesting, but not something tocall home about, let alone pay as much as we did. The ramen itself, $16 for bad ramen when more expensive places charge less andhave way better quality, seriously bad. As others have mentioned as well, the atmosphere is just loud, so much you can't hearpeople next to you very well. Menu is also difficult to read and understand. No $ sign so you're left guessing what the numbersare. Ingredients are listed vaguely. We spent quite some time looking for actual menus online. So ultimately, don't let thehipster hype fool you, if you're looking to spend more $$$ than a casual night's outing and have only okay quality food or less, then this is perfect for you. Otherwise, look elsewhere. Not worth the time or $$$. Read more
Amazing Japanese food. We had two orders of pork dumplings ?to die for. We had giant squid which was so tasty. The vibe was... great in the restaurant but there was a wait so we sat at the bar. That was cool because we could see everything made. Read more
