Reviews for Wajan in Portland, OR
We tried this place while visiting Portland. This is our first time trying out authentic Indonesian food. I had Malaysian food... before and could relate some of the food names. The place only had couple of parking spots which were full, so we had to dostreet parking. The service was top-notch and quick. When we reached, the place was mostly empty. We ordered Nasi Campur withpork belly and potatoes. We liked the food overall. Although, we expected to get more pork belly than potatoes, but it was theopposite. Read more

Nice atmosphere with extensive, comfortable outdoor seating and Indonesian music and decor. Good service as well- prompt and... attentive and food and drinks arrived quickly. As for the food, it was ok. The menu was authentic but the actual results wereless so. As a note, my wife is Indonesian so we had high expectations. I actually enjoyed my beef rendang but my wife wasdisappointed. Indonesian food is all about spices and she said her nasi campur was lacking and believed the sambal was actuallystraight from a supermarket jar. If you aren?t experienced in Indonesian food- I do believe you will have a good experiencehere. Indonesian food is most similar to Thai or Malay food with some differences of course. Read more
I was asked recently, "What's my favorite restaurant in Portland?" I didn't have an answer. After trying Wajan - I think I have... found my new favorite. They've got a bar and what's more, they offer a signature special cocktail each week. The salad/fruitchanges too but what we had was incredible. I could have eaten it all day. We ordered "family style", intending to share. But Icouldn't. Mine was too good to share. Definitely returning here soon. Read more
Nice little Indonesian restaurant in Portland. It is not a ?fusion? restaurant so the food is more authentic. Ordered the nasi... uduk with beef rendang. Overall it was good and the portion was decent. Tasted too much cinnamon(?) but otherwise it was fine. Also ordered some appetizers (gorengan and chicken satay) and they were also fine. You have to pay for extra sambal and in thecase of the rendang and the nasi uduk, you cant ask for more spicier option unless you buy the sambal. Nice decor and alsofriendly staff. Would recommend this place if you want to try Indonesian food. Read more
I enjoy my lunch at Wajan. The place has a beautiful atmosphere inside and outside. We have to park on the street, but that was... fine. Customer service was excellent and food cameI out fast. Nasi Rames was an excellent choice. It has good portion of Ricewith a variety of sides. For TOFU lover like I do, Tahu goreng nanas won?t disappoint you. If you don?t like meat, get thegado-gado. My husband said it was excellent. My daughter loves her bakmi / noodles, but the only problem is they only come withpork. I definitely will be back and I will recomend this place to everyone. Service is top notch. The food just wasn't good to me. I have limited experience with Indonesian food while I lived in Southern... CA but it's similar to many other Asian cuisines. The coconut rice had a hint of flavor but it's done better elsewhere. Reallywanted to try the fried hard boiled egg but all it does is leave a thin skin. The dessert was good but a tiny pot will cost you$6. You should obviously try for yourself but this won't ever be on the top of my list to try again. Read more
I tried the Kari Ayam (chicken in a yellow curry soup with rice noodles) with the Es Teh Jeruk Nipis (black tea and limeade).... Was the perfect meal to warm up now that we?re in our cold and rainy season. Fast service, great flavors, and just enough spice. The portion was practically big enough for two. Definitely coming back here to try more. $15 for the dish, $4.50 for the drink Read more
