Reviews for Delta Cafe in Portland, OR
Maybe I just ordered the wrong food. It's entirely possible that I picked the three things this restaurant has but isn't very... good at making. I want to start with a positive, the mash potatoes are great. Glad I accidentally ordered a double portion ofthem. I will say tho that the chicken gravy is just pepper gravy with chicken pieces in it. Not bad, just that I wouldn't callit chicken gravy. Now for the semi good, the Corn Bread Muffins were bland. They tasted marginally better the deeper you gotinto them, but I understand why butter and honey was sent along with them. If these had been brought to my BBQ I would assumethe person liked me well enough to bring something, but not so well as to bring me something particularly good. Edible, but notreally good. Now for the bad. The images on the menu showed picture perfect chicken fried steak and Fried Okra. Two of myfavorite foods, as a small town Texas girl. So you can only imagine how absolutely gutted I was when I got Okra that had beenseasoned and dusted in bread crumbs, and a chicken fried steak that was thiner than a 25-page note book. Honestly I ended upwith four times the amount of mash potatoes and gravy than I did chicken fried steak. And I could forgive small portions, evenat the price I paid. But the flavors were just not there. I know that different cooks make things differently, there's a bunchof different recipes. But in my 37 years of living on this earth, I have never had a chicken fried steak taste like practicallynothing. I mean there was flavor but it wasn't deep fried, breaded, cubed steak. Chicken fried steak, as differently as it canbe made, it tends to at least be that much in taste. And honestly the "breading" on the okra was so dusty I choked on it acouple of times. Just super disappointed. Read more

Service is always great, drinks are great and the food is not that good. Our ribs were burnt and I should say something to the... staff but every time we eat here the food is just not that good! This time the collard greens were awesome, the cornbread waskiller. Last time we got the jambalaya it lacked flavor and I couldn't stand the collard greens. This place has great ambianceand a great patio and was totally dead on a Friday night. I wish the best for this place and its staff. Whats the story? Thekitchen burnt out? Owners? Feel free to write me back, I'm sorry to write a half negative review. I really want you to succeed.I ate at a newish chain in Boise Idaho. (it's hard to tell its a chain.) It's packed every night. Menu items are different andinteresting. It's called Tupelo Honey. I would support a restaurant intervention with all my might. (I dont like chains but Itotally get why The Matador is busy all the time!) Do your servers love your food? Is the kitchen burnt out? Are the owners???So many questions. I will say that back in the day I ordered your Mac Etouffe style. It was amazing. So I ordered it again andagain and again when it was available and it got worse every time. Consistency is so important and I know I'm a total a hole forwriting this. I don't want to see this place go. I talked with my neighbors to find out if I'm the only one that feels this way. They said they haven't gone back in years. Read more
My husband and I have been coming here for years, and each time, the food has been nothing short of amazing! We even took the... in-laws here who are from the south, and they loved the food and the atmosphere. My father in-law is a big fan of collard greensand Delta Cafe has his stamp of approval! This is definitely a staple for us, and we enjoy coming back each and every time forthe great food, great service, and nostalgia. I also love that they feature local artists on the walls in the bar area! Read more

Update: two years later and three starts still applies. Not because the food was bad, but because of little things. A cold side... of hollandaise sauce, fruit flies follow the ice tea. Original Review: Ya know, maybe it was because we ordered off the happyhour menu, but my take away from the Delta was just "meh". The hush puppies were over fried and really hard. The remouladesauce (or whatever that dipping sauce was) was ok for about two bites but then it just started tasting weird. The chickenpo'boy was on a broken bun that spilled all the contents. Chicken was ok, but nothing special. For what I was always told was agreat place to eat in Portland it didn't really deliver. It was ok, ya know, but nothing that wowed me. Read more
Well coincidentally I was in the mood for Cajun food. And we ran into this bar not knowing they served Cajun food. Well needless... to say my shrimp poboy was delicious. And my girlfriends jambalaya was excellent. Cornbread was a bit plain and overbaked. ButI would highly recommend to come to this bar for excellent Cajun food. Read more
Getting our food was a little bit slow but it was worth it. Excellent southern cuisine for a dive bar feel. Good hole in the... wall place. Will go again! Read more
