Haven't had Puerto Rican food since I lived there back in the early 2000s. Ordered the red beans & some maduros yesterday. I... must say.....OH MY GODDDD!!! They were phenomenal! I've raved so much about it that my coworker is now intrigued & looking atthe menu! I would've gave it 5 stars but I ordered a side of pan de agua con manteguilla. I received a super small square of 2pieces of water bread (like small like my palm & i wear a size S glove) that I'm assuming they covered the inside pieces withbutter and then pressed in a panini press (totally stuck together). I was charged $3.75 for that. I wanted a couple chunks ofpan de agua along with pats of butter so I could sop up the sauce from the red beans! (hint hint guys!!) Next time I'mdefinitely trying the empanadas!! (or lightbulb food as my dad used to call them when we lived in Joyuda. Everytime i'd gointo a little bodega i'd get one..."you eating that lightbulb food again....it just sits there under those light bulbs!" LMAOOOO!!") Read more
I've been wanting to try Puerto Rican cuisine for a while now, and there aren't too many options in Pittsburgh. When I saw... Flavor of Puerto Rico was offering a $6 discount on an online ordering app, I was definitely interested. Tonight, I ordered thebaked chicken sandwich, sweet plantains (maduros), a beef and cheese empanada, as well as a slice of tres leches. It was alovely meal at a great price. The sandwich was simple, but very good. Their chicken is roasted perfectly, and incredibly tender.They give you a pretty good portion for the price, too. Pan de agua, or water bread, is homemade and soaks up the chickenjuices. It's great! There's also a bit of cheese in this sandwich, which was a nice touch. This was my first time tryingmaduros, so I wasn't too sure what to expect other than a sweet flavor. These were definitely sweet, and they are generous withtheir side portions. Maduros are caramelized on the outside and quite soft on the inside. I'm not the biggest fan of maduros nowthat I know their flavor, but these were clearly expertly made and still worth trying. The empanadas (or pastellitos) are anabsolute must try when you visit this place. I got the beef and cheese, which was sooo good! The ground beef is juicy andflavorful, while the crust is light and crunchy. I didn't find any cheese in this empanada, though. I was a fan of their tresleches. It was very well soaked and creamy. It's topped with a nice coating and a dusting of cinnamon (the cinnamon flavor isnot very prominent). The dessert is not too heavy, either. I do wish the portion was a little bigger. All in all, this is ahidden gem in Mount Oliver. There are only a few Puerto Rican places in Pittsburgh, and this surely excellent food which seemsquite authentic! Now they have a more consistent menu, too, instead of just daily specials. Definitely worth a try for anyonewho's curious about Puerto Rican cuisine. Read more
