Reviews for Wheelhouse in Opp, AL
My wife's 29th annual 21st birthday was Wednesday and Steve (my BFAM*) came up from Florida to attend her party. He offered to... take us out for dinner and, although I'm ashamed to admit it, neither my wife or I had ever eaten at the Wheelhouse. We made thesuggestion and he jumped at it. Well, not literally, but you know what I mean. We arrived and were immediately led to a boothafter asking our preference. We didn't have one, but in hindsight, it was a beautiful evening and we should have taken advantageof the outdoor seating that is available. (See the picture.) We ordered our beverages. I got a Coke this time instead of sweettea. I know, it shocked my wife, too. She and Steve both ordered a Coke Zero. We opted out of an appetizer and instead orderedour entrees. My wife and I got the blackened shrimp alfredo. After a short wait and my son knocking my drink over, our foodarrived. In short, it was magnificent!. There were more than enough shrimp and they weren't tiny. If I were to guesstimate, I'dsay they were 31-40 (large) sized. The Alfredo sauce was scrumptious and it was served with garlic bread, cut diagonally. Ireally loved the atmosphere of the place. High ceilings, great lighting (not too dark, but not too bright), and the combinationof old and new decorations and fixtures was neat. I also loved what I called the art gallery room: giant TV on the wallsurrounded by dozens of paintings. I'm not sure if they were of local artists or all done by the same person, but they areamazing. Anyhoo, we had a wonderful experience and I can't wait to go back again. Maybe next time I'll try the steak orsomething with a little more local flavor. Either way, I'm sure I won't be disappointed! Great selection of southern coastal cuisine. Great service
First the good... the atmosphere is wonderful. The dining area is clean and inviting. The service was good. The less good...... The menu (we were there for lunch) is pretty limited and basic for what otherwise seems like an upscale restaurant. However theportions were plentiful and the food was pretty good. The bad... sandwich prices seem a bit steep but become even more so whenyou discover that unless you order a burger, you get no sides with any of their other sandwiches. I ordered a Po' Boy and sinceI wanted fries, had to order them on the side. Seems like they should come with a $15 sandwich. The worst... The calamari. Wepaid a hefty price for it and it was very chewy and there wasn't much of it. We left more than half of what they did serve inthe dish. I would never order it again. Really the worst we have ever had at any restaurant that serves it. We had lunch withone order of fries on the side and the calamari and out bill came to $50, $60 once I added in the tip. Way too much for lunchand the experience we had. All in all we were mostly underwhelmed by our experience. We may go back but it won't be often andwe definitely will not be ordering the calamari. We stopped here while traveling, there were not great choices in the area and after looking at menu options online and laughing... about the names of meals on the kids menu, we decided to try it out. It was delicious! The fries are awesome, shrimp po-boy wasawesome. Our server Dan was very nice and attentive and sat and talked with us a little after we paid our bill. Neat littleplace with great food. About 6 minutes off the Hwy, but definitely worth it, we will stop again on our travels next summer. Read more
The food is remarkable! I love dining here! So today, 08/02/22, I visited one of my favorite restaurants. My past review of... the Wheelhouse restaurant was a testament to my experiences dining in. But today I called in my order. Upon getting to myoffice, which is 3 minutes away, and opening my meal, I was shocked to see that 5 pieces of thinely sliced grilledsquash/zucchini cost me $4! The picture isn't lying! I have not eaten any of the food prior to taking the picture! The friedcalamari was very salty, soggy with grease, and cold! Making it inedible! $18.70 spent on a meal and I can only consume the 5vegetable slices! This is the absolute worst meal I've ever had here. I don't know what the problem may have been, but I praythey work it out because I love this place and I love supporting local non-chain restaurants. Read more

Very nice visit to this restaurant. It has indoor and outdoor seating and we opted for indoors because it was getting late,... cooler, and a weather front was coming. Friendly and courteous staff promptly seated us and took our drink order. All foodswere prepared well. If not for passing through we would definitely stop again. I was impressed with the place setting theyhad. Read more
