Nice waiter but this google listing is just fully inaccurate and should be taken down. Gohan-ya no longer exists as a... restaurant. None of the pictures or reviews here reflect reality, because Gohan-ya has been taken over by Lovely Day whichserves tasty Thai food, but disappointing Japanese food on a small side-menu titled Gohan-ya I came here for some Japanesecomfort food (the curry that gohan-ya was known for) and was given a runny broth with sichuan peppers and a fork to eat it with.It wasn?t awful but certainly wasn?t what was advertised or something I?d ever order again. Also they only take cash or Amexhere Read more

The salmon Bowles sashimi quality isn't the best. Chikarashi has much better quality sashimi for the price. Chicken teishoku... set is underwhelming. It doesn't come with miso soup or rice which was my fault for not noticing the add on... however japanesefood not coming with rice is confusing I was not aware of the gluten-free identity of the restaurant Gohan-ya started sharingthe same restaurant space with the Thai restaurant lovely day around 2020. When reading reviews take note of the date. Read more

They advertise japanese style curry but what they served us was more Thai or Indian style curry (see photos). I did like the... chicken a lot that we added onto the curry for $4 extra. I did like the kubota pumpkin soup. Its a chill place but the food tooktoo long to come out and its not described properly (not true japanese style curry). They also lose a star from me for being?cash only / american express only?. Read more

The food in there is great. My friends were both vegan and gluten-free, and I am an omnivore; and this place offers enough... variety to cover all these requirements! Everything on the menu is gluten-free. I ordered the Ginger fried chicken, the gingeris not over powering but you can still taste and see it on the protein. It was delicious. Oh and how can I forget about rice! Iordered the Multi-grain brown rice, it was delicious as well. My friend ordered the meatballs, which smelled amazing. I almoststole a piece from her, she loved it. And my vegan friend, she ordered the veggie curry, she also enjoyed it too! All in all Ihave no complaints. The service was friendly and timely. The time that we went was exactly the time when they opened, 6PM. Theplace looked clean and well decorated and ordered, very cozy! Give the chicken a try if you go there! *Also, there was no storefront sign when we went, so it may be a bit confusing at first. But they are next to a bar restaurant called Bar Belly. Read more

Very cute and small place! It seems to be trendy for ?hipsters.? However, the food is amazing and very fresh! ????????The only... thing that was subpar was our waiter who easily got distracted by their friends. Read more

Amid a pocket of hidden gems where Chinatown meets the Lower East Side, Gohan might be the most prized find. Fewer than 10... tables and two small bars comprise a uniquely intimate environment that's delightfully candlelit and adorned appropriately withJapanese decor. A surprising blend of oldies and reggae juxtaposes that Asian theme for a slightly more eclectic experience thatworks magically. But the food is what places Gohan among New York's best dinner destinations. Friendly to vegetarians and thegluten-averse, the menu features a variety of distinctive small plates conveniently categorized by protein. Order many to shareas your meal or a couple as starters. (Challenge: See how many veggies you can identify in the all-world pickle bowl.) And thesoups, salads and entrees are just as character-rich and satisfying, particularly the tuna and salmon rice bowls. Request the"spicy sauce"; proceed with caution. As my dining companion and I were overcoming bouts of winter illness, we forwent theselection of Japanese beers, sakes and other wines, but they looked deliciously adventurous?as did the deserts. Thankfully, thatmakes an exception to my no-repeat rule. To be sure, we'll return soon for the full Gohan experience. Read more
