Thanks for ruining our anniversary. My partner made a reservation two weeks ago to celebrate our anniversary. It?s restaurant... week and we love trying new places and experiences. It?s 90 degrees outside so my boyfriend wore a collared short and shorts andI wore a dress. Upon walking in we were instantly stopped by a security guard who told my boyfriend he was wearing shorts andthe restaurant host would turn us away. The restaurant host then proceeded to tell us we should of looked at the website to seethere is a dress code (I booked through google reservations and someone called to confirm and never ONCE mentioned a dresscode). Dowlings is lovely and my dining experience was wonderful. The food was creative and delicious and the service is unmatched. I... just started a new job in the neighborhood so all of the Carlyle restaurants are going to quickly become regular spots for me.Dowlings is also perfect for special occasions. The decor is interesting and you can just feel the history of the building.Everyone who waited on us was super attentive and accommodating. First, the service is about as good as anyone would ever want. The main server was knowledgeable and helpful with menu choices.... And the Captain was a local who gave great background information about the rich history of the restaurant and how your orderwas sourced. Dowling's was renovated and the decor is stunning. The atmosphere is amazing which keeps it far from the maddingcrowd of restaurants-in-hotels vibe. The tuna tartare was light, cheerful and a great way to start off. The dover sole is ararity in the city. It is prepared and deboned table-side. It has a light, lemon, taste that melts in your mouth. Similarly,the lamb shank is tender and falls off the bone. I loved it. But let it be known I?m a fan of the classics. It may not be Gen Z friendly, (Though parts of the service are... TIkTok content worthy. Namely the preparation of table side dishes, A flambe station adds a touch of drama to the steak Dianedish for instance, set on fire with a pour of cognac). But where Dowling?s ?lacks? in the trendy it excels in service, ambianceand decor. The menu isn?t adventurous or ground breaking. Mainstays you might expect - Branzino, Salmon, Steak? But you don?tcome to a place like Dowling?s for a culinary challenge or quirky cocktails. You come for the old school Manhatten charm thatmany have forgotten . In this area Dowling?s excels. One of the earlier reviews described it as ?stuffy? and I agree. Butluckily for me that was exactly what I was in the mood for !
