Reviews for Southern Kitchen in New Market, VA
The first thing that hits you upon opening the front door is the aroma of fried chicken. I had no intention of ordering chicken... before opening that door but once we stepped inside, it was a no-brainer. If it tasted half as good as it smelled, we were infor a treat. Started off with the Hush Puppies, which were out of this world good. And the chicken definitely tasted as good asit smelled. Southern Kitchen opened their doors in 1955, meaning they've been in business for 67 years. I'm not surprised!! Read more
All we have heard about this place..best chicken, homemade pies..yadda yadda yadda...it was DIRTY..( sticky table...floors not... swept).the chicken was dry and way over fried and the pie had actually gone bad...we got the coconut...$45 for the worst meal wehave had in awhile...maybe it was good at one time, but not anymore... We stopped for breakfast and I had high hopes based on reviews. The place needs a face-lift and some fresh paint. It could be a... fun 60's, 70's themed restaurant with Formica table tops, old-fashioned milkshake machines and soda fountain at the counter. Butthe juke boxes at the tables didn't work and big TV's make no sense at all. The bathroom was dinghy. As for the food it was verybasic and bland. We ordered 2 omelets. In neither was the cheese melted. The bread (rye & wheat) was good but the coffee wasweak. The prices were reasonable for what we got. Our server and the hostess were very courteous and friendly. I'm sorry I can'trecommend this restaurant. Perhaps lunch is better. Read more

The peanut soup!!!! Excellent. A must if you go. The fries are super crispy, and the homemade meringue pies are incredible. We... had to try two- lemon and coconut, both so delish! A huge layer of meringue, I wish we would have taken a slice to go home.Friendly staff, real diner atomsphere, and go for a walk down Main Street- some very cool little shops to see. We willdefinitely go back to try the fried green beans, granola pudding, and the malts! Read more
