Reviews for Fred's Shanty Restaurant in New London, CT
It's really not that special and BYOB. Fries were really not that good. I ordered some calamari which was really not special.... It's basically a fried food off the water place, However, you can sit outside right off the water, which is nice. Looks likethere are a couple of real restaurants next door- but I've never been to them Read more
We ordered a few times when Fred?s reopened under a new owner. I am not pleased. Was so much better before under Fred then under... John. The staff is all new and many are just rude. Ice cream area is dirty. One girl was eating fries when I ordered some softice cream. She put her container of fries by the ice cream spouts, didn?t wash her hands and the soft ice cream was hollowinside. Eating on the job? Week before same girl was sitting in the ice cream station and scrolling on her phone. Had to waittill she was ready.? No thanks. It looks dark and dirty inside. I won?t go back after years of going to Fred?s shanty. The newowner needs to come down hard on his staff or else get Fred?s teens back again. I only reviewed the ice cream. The dinners wereearly spring and take out. Not great and not worth the money. Read more
The fried scallops meal was good. Fries are tiny shoe string, but that was good. Wish there was something other than prepackaged... "Kens" tartar sauce available. Clam chowder was runny and just not good. Tasted sour. Hot lobster roll maybe had old bay onit, but not hot butter or anything. Very Dry and that made the$30 worth of lobster dry. I won't go back. I've been a few times and the food is decent for fried food, but the hotdogs and fries leave something to be desired. It's... simple to stop by the shanty after a day on the boat, but it's fairly slow for the season. I believe it's a seasonal restaurantand if that's the case, it's totally not worth going unless you're looking for slow fast food style food. The last time we werethere we waited about 10 minutes for someone to come take our order at the window. Then, we wanted ice cream, waited another 10and no one ever came to take our order at the ice cream window. Foods decent, service is lacking. I'll probably still go aftera day on the boat, but I McDonald's is more reliable. Read more
It was our first time here and we were pleased. Staff was awesome and courteous. Prices were fair, and portions were just right.... One note, they don?t have bathroom facilities, which after a two hour long drive was not fun, but the restaurant down the waywas very kind to accommodate my party of 6. Read more
I enjoyed my meal ( shrimp dinner) & other items. The only thing that I found to be sad was wanting a lobster ????roll but was... told they don't have any. Yet, asking the gentleman if it was out of season or maybe another day they will have it again, Iwas avoided in response to my question. I drove over 3 hours and was disappointed by how dry the gentleman acted towards me inasking a simple question. So if anyone can tell me when most likely the restaurant will have some I would gladly return toenjoy one. Read more
Great spot, decent food, great prices, nice area, right on the mouth of the Thames river, overlooking a marina and EB Groton... across the river. Nice atmosphere. Fast. Read more
Any reviews prior to the change in fries are to be discarded? this pains me not to give 5 stars. Fred?s used to be a 5 star for... 35+ years. This summer my mom went and said it was poor quality food. I hated to hear this but once I tasted the fries I knew itwas ruined. So, so sad - they had the best fries ever and now they are cardboard. Bring back the OG fries please! Went once thissummer. Used to go once a week. I?ve heard a lot of similar complaints as well. Apparently they changed owners? Read more
