Now under new ownership. Service is still superb, but food quality has suffered. No longer real country cooking. Vegetables from... a can. French fries barely hot, limp and way too salty. I enjoyed my visit to the Jay cafe, very nice faces, and the host was great ???????? The food was AMAZING and mouthwatering, and... quick. The steak was like a 5-Star steakhouse quality. If you'll ever in the area, or just want to get out of the city! I found a good spot for you'll!! Need to stop by this place... sometime, too bad this plate filled me up. The chicken fried steak got a lot of reviews and it was good/fresh, and crispy outside, but I wasn't blown away by any of the... entrees. The fries were not that great either (generally my favorite menu item). So why so many stars??? Because the onionstrings were amazing!! The milk snakes were delicious (blue bell ice cream). The absolute best was the pies!,! In order of myfavorites, 1. The peanut butter with oreo crumbs (WOW!!!!) , 2. Apple pie (served nice and hot; nice thin pieces of apple;probably the best apple pie I've ever had), and 3. The peach cobbler (mediocre). Read more
The Jay Cafe is a great spot for regulars and out of towners and is about 15 minutes from Brazos Bend State Park. I can see why... there are so many reviews for The Jay- great food and staff! My server convinced me (didn?t take much convincing) to get The JayBurger which was excellent. It is 2 quarter pound patties stuffed with cheese exploding out when you take a bite. Great flavorand go with the jalapeño sourdough bun for just a kick of heat. The servers were very welcoming and enjoy their jobs as do theguys in the kitchen.
