Reviews for Cracker Barrel Old Country Store in Mt Vernon, IL
First time here. First you walk through a gift shop to get to the restaurant area. They then offer you breakfast or lunch (or... both). Tables are right on top of each other. Service was very slow. Personally, I thought the menu was rather lacking inoptions unless you want breakfast which is also a good section of the lunch menu too. Chicken and dumplings are too peppered.Fried okra was good. Fried apples have the skins still on, if they peeled them they would've been good. Next person gotbiscuits and gravy and said they were made with bacon grease so they weren't good. And from the kids menu we got confettipancakes. They weren't "confetti" pancakes but fruity pebbles pancakes but she still ate them after getting over the initialsurprise of cereal in pancakes. Getting refills on drinks was difficult as was getting a to go container. The waitress alsonever mentioned you have to go to the store (which only has one line) to pay. Only when I asked for a container (after havinganother employee track her down) and tried to pay was it mentioned. I don't get all the hype about it. Read more
This is our first visit and we had horrible experience. It took more than 1hour from being seated to getting food. Also another... family next to our table just left with no serving any food after waiting more than 40 minutes. This restaurant wasted ourvaluable time and ruined our family trip. I don't think, we will visit this restaurant again. Read more
Always solid. I stopped here on my national tour for my hiking YouTube channel, "Beyond the Pavement" that was very friendly and... food excellent. Read more
The food and service were good. The menu feels very pared-down and there were several items that we were specifically looking... for that were not on the menu. Thankfully, fried apples and okra were both still on the menu. The new peach sweet tea made mewonder how I could re-create that at home! Read more

We stopped in about 2 PM on Sunday of July 4th weekend. They were extremely busy. We have never seen a Cracker Barrel so staffed... up. They had multiple seaters. They had at least 21 servers, 3 greeters, 3 cashier's, multiple bussers and 3 managers. Theservice was quick and efficient. Everyone was doing every job. Managers were clearing tables. Servers were clearing andsweeping, etc. It was definitely a well oiled machine of service. The breakfast food was not quite up to standard. The Biscuitswere light and fluffy. The gravy must have been microwaved, as the little blue bowl was so hot you could barely touch it, butthe gravy was only slightly warm. The over easy eggs were cooked properly, but tiny and cut in rectangles. The sugar ham wascooked to death, hard and dry. The bacon on one plate was crispy. The bacon on another plate was completely limp and nasty, although ordered crispy. Thankfully, it was replaced. The scrambled eggs with cheese were a flat, dry, tough pancake with aslice of cheese simi-melted on top. The hashbrown casserole was very good. So, loss of 2 stars for inconsistent food. Plus of 2stars for Service above and beyond the expected and demonstration of teamwork under pressure. With management this involved, Iam sure that the food consistently will come back as they aren't so slammed. Read more
Very friendly staff, from the time we entered, to our server, and when we checked out. The food was very good, my wife... especially loved the warm syrup for the hotcakes. The grits and biscuits and gravy were great. Read more
I personally enjoy stopping off at a Cracker Barrel near the end of a long road trip. This location is one I've stopped at... before and I've enjoyed it's service. This most recent stop was enjoyable as well with great home cooking for my entire familyto enjoy. We even got some toys and random odds and ends from the store before hitting the road again. Will most definitely stopat this location in the future before finishing off a trip. Read more
