Given its recent James Beard Award, my girlfriend and I were both really excited to give The Diplomat a try. There were many... parts that I really enjoyed and I think it was an above average meal, but fell just slightly below my expectations. The waitstaff was very friendly and the restaurant has a cool retro decor. I wasn't terribly impressed by the cocktail list, but fans ofdark liquors would probably be satisfied. The dishes are meant to be shared, so I would plan to order about 2 per person, depending on how hungry you are. Our favorite entree was definitely the beech mushroom - it felt like a playful version ofcalamari, and the accompanying dip had a great umami flavor. The chicken confit was also very tender and flavorful, and the bedof quinoa and peach porridge complemented the meat well. In terms of what we felt could have been improved: the octopus had agreat blend of flavors, though I felt like it needed a bit more textural variety. I would definitely recommend against thesourdough bread - it was both burnt and pretty boring. The highlight of the meal was definitely the peanut butter pie. Thatfirst bite was just absolute heaven. I would strongly recommend getting it, though all of the desserts looked great. I livenearby so I'm definitely planning to come back, if nothing else just for that pie. It looks like they change out their menufrequently, so I look forward to trying out whatever new dish they have in store! Read more

This was our first visit to the Diplomat via recommendations from my in-laws. We had later reservations and they were extremely... busy, they were turning away people. The food and service were really good. I love a good Aviation cocktail, and I wasextremely happy they had all the ingredients to make them for me. The food was really good accross the board, with 3 standouts. The Anchovy "Deviled Eggs" was amazing. I am not a huge fan of hardboiled egg-whites, so when I saw it was all yoke, I wasecstatic, and it did not disappoint. The fried Beech mushrooms were crazy good and I could eat a few orders of them. Finally, their burger! Next to Au Cheval in Chicago, this could be one of the greatest burgers in the US. I would order this repeatedlyif I could have it delivered to Chicago. All around a great experience and will definitely be coming back. I will see if theycan make that burger to go, because I will get one to go every time I am in Milwaukee. Read more

The Diplomat is the kind of restaurant with vibes of being cool, kitschy, hip, and retro tucked away into the folds of... Milwaukee's lower east side / Brady Street area. Our servers were on par, and we even got to meet Anna, the co-owner/ wife ofhead chef / and all around guru. She was great and spent time asking us questions about how we were and even recalling a phoneconversation from twi years ago about a gift card! The food was great. We really enjoyed the fried mushrooms and my wife wouldhighly, highly recommend the beet toast. Even I ate a few bites and I am not a fan of beets. The trout with lentils was ourfavorite dish of the night, by far. So much flavor packed into every bite! Our dessert was the meir lemon caramel cake, which tome was a bit off... definitely could have done with stronger lemon flavors coming through and the caramel could have beenstronger too, although I did enjoy the lightness of the cake itself. Overall, highly recommend this restaurant if your in theMilwaukee area! Read more
