I visited late on a Saturday morning to experience what all the reviews were saying as I headed east from the Shenandoah region.... The store and eatery, a converted service station from appearances, sits conveniently near the intersection of I-81 and VA-11.The back of the place boasts a welcoming view of the mountains in the distance, which if not for the slightly coolertemperatures would have been where I ate. Walking inside led me to a charming country store with all kinds of food items forpurchase and more. Inside seating seemed to accommodate maybe 20 or so, including a window seat next to the freezer that suitedme just fine. Service at the ordering counter proved welcoming, pleasant, and efficient, as my food was cheerfully handed to mewithin a reasonable time of roughly 15 minutes or so. I opted for a sampling of the brisket sandwich about which I read inreviews plus a piece of fried chicken and fries. Desserts are conveniently pre-packaged but house-made, so I also got somebanana pudding to eat there and a buttermilk pie slice for the road. I liked the sandwich as did other reviewers, as the brisketwas portioned generously and sliced quite thin on a soft bun. I would have liked more flavor in the meat itself, but the tablesauces helped address my tastes enough. The chicken was both crisp on the outside and still hot and a little juicy on theinside. Seasoning was not too salty for me either. Fries likewise were cooked well and seasoned nicely too. The desserts bothtasted fine without being either too sweet or too rich. The total bill came to about $38 including applicable taxes and such.Surely my visit was a satisfying way to send me on my way, and I would be glad to make a second visit to this uniquely countryplace if I were in the region again. TLDR: Divey country store environment with delicious BBQ. Come for the pulled pork and paper thin brisket. Vibe: 5/5. Operating... out of an old gas station, Shaffer's really embraces the old country store vibe. Inside they have a plethora of cold craft beersin both 6 packs and singles to be enjoyed with your BBQ. They also offer a nice selection of local meats to take home. Service:5/5. The staff at Shaffer's was very hospitable! From taking our order at the counter and giving us recommendations to walkingour food out to their back patio where we were seated, they were very nice and accommodating. Food: 5/5. We wanted to try asmuch as possible so we opted for the brisket sandwich, the monthly special sandwich which was their take on a cubano and theredneck egg roll (pulled pork inside a fried egg roll wrapper). All the meats were well executed. The pulled pork in the the eggroll and Cubano was moist and fork tender. The brisket was a tad on the dry side, however the paper thin consistency saved it.All in all, you can't go wrong with any of the sandwiches. Read more

For the last 18 months I have been driving up and down Rt 81 stopping at the typical chain for fast food. Many times seeing the... different BBQ Dining signs along the way saying, one day I need to stop in one of those. Well yesterday was the day. A splitsecond call lead me to Shaffer's BBQ. It's been awhile since I said OMG out loud when I bit into the Brisket Sandwich. And thenagain with the Mac & Cheese. A great view of the open fields and Blue Ridge Mountains in the background. The only disappointmentis not finding this place sooner. I plan to be back soon! Three Thumbs up! Read more

I had the fried oysters, ranch potato salad, and macaroni and cheese. The fried oysters were servedpiping hot and were perfectly seasoned. Would highly recommend this place. Read more

Saw their sign on the restaurant board along 81 and had to pay our namesake a visit. Glad we did. Located a little ways... outside Middletown, sits the longtime bbq business. Dine in & pick up to go. We had the pork minced bbq w slaw and thought thevinegar based sauce was very appetizing. It had a nice long lasting zing. I hardly needed to added any additional sauce since itwas so moist and flavorable. We added baked beans and yellow potato salad and thoroughly enjoyed the smokiness of the beans andthe creamy, chunks of potatoes. Their menu contains many more choices than what we ordered. Additionally, Shaffers sell theirown canned products: sauces, pickles, and much more. We chose to eat at the window counter overlooking the pasture across theroad. Great homey, country market feel.
