This was the first time going to the Alamo. We were a party of 3 couples. Our server, River, was very friendly, very chipper,... and very helpful for us first timers. The food was awesome, the staff was very friendly, the drinks were good and overall, wewill go back the next time we are in the area. It had a very nice, friendly atmosphere. I would suggest to make reservations theday before. They do not take same day reservations. A couple of us had the half rack BBQ ribs, awesome, my hubby and brother inlaw had the prime rib, my husband had tears in his eyes, lol. I could go on and on about the food, but I just suggest that youtry it out yourself. If you are not satisfied, then go to McDonald's. River, thank you for making our dining experience amemorable one. Plenty of parking, seated right away, and tons of empty tables. Should have been my sign to turn around? It?s started out... amazing, fresh baked rolls that were delicious, reminded me of Ruth Chris Steak (I understand I?m not there) house bread.Ordered cheese curds, they were okay. Pretty sure they were frozen. Who order cheese curds at a steak house, I guess us, butmost cheese curds are frozen right? Okay cool so the cheese curds were not that great but they make fresh bake bread, the resthas to be great?. Our food HAD to be sitting under a blown light bulb light or on a server pick up station without heat lampsfor 10+ minutes, my ribs were definitely luke warm, same with potato?s and were starting to harden on the top, and the onionrings were warm but defiantly not home made FROZEN?. I ate the top of the ribs, a little mashed potato?s, and 1 onion ring. Thiswas my meal? My wife said basic?. Chicken sandwich no sauce and couldn?t taste the marinade? fries okay? You make fresh bread?make fresh onion rings?.make fresh (not frozen) fries. Your 5 minutes from farmer markets?. Your google response are all aboutthe quality of meat?. I highly recommend the gouda and red pepper soup! ^_^ Most of its actually very good. I do wish they'd find a new flavor method... in cooking the asparagus. Maybe grill it? With olive ???? oil and lemon ???? juice mix with crushed garlic????? Read more

Always great, friendly service. The bull bites and sauce are a must have appetizer every time we go. The overnight marinaded... steak (I believe it?s called the distiller) had a sweet taste to it which I wasn?t a fan of. Wish they would have included thatin the description. We had a great visit. We got there in time for happy hour apps and had the nachos. They were covered with yummy melty cheese!!... We both ordered the ribeye. They were cooked to our liking but sadly were not seasoned. We had to salt them ourselves. Thesalads were good and the salad plate was nice and cold! The Almo is such a ubiquitous part of Mattoon, that I often forget that it's there I feel like I ate there just yesterday, but,... truthfully I hadn't been here in years before this visit. The decor is what you'd expect of a steak house. There are a numberof tables surrounding a large U-shaped bar. It's dimly lit and cozy. Service is very friendly and prompt. I didn't have to waitlong to get my drink refilled. The rolls are an essential start to your meal so be sure to try them. I had the distiller steakcooked medium which was melt-in-your-mouth good. Would have liked to have had it served a bit hotter, as it felt like it wasrested a bit too long. Not a deal breaker by any means. Overall good experience. I will be back again soon. Read more
