Reviews for J. Gumbo's in Louisville, KY
We ordered the bourbon chicken, red beans and rice and jumbalaya and all of it bland. All of it not fresh. The man working was... rude and made us feel like an inconvenience while trying to help our son decide what to order. None of us finished our meals andwalked out. It was horrible and disappointing. Pretty great food. The VooDoo chicken was reasonably spicy. No real complaints but not particularly a ?wow? either
Always good. But the Po'boys were better when they actually used French bread instead of Texas toast.
I do not recommend this place. We had not eaten at a J. Gumbo's in quite some time because a lot of them closed. The 1 person... that was working was incredibly rude and should not be interacting with customers. We ordered the Voodoo chicken, BumblebeeStew, 1 soft drink, 1 water, and an extra piece of bread. Total with tax was $28.70! Mine tasted like it used to, however, itwas noticeably watered down. The sauce used to be thick with lots of chicken, but this bowl was borderline soup with hardly anychicken. I'm guessing these steps are taken in order to save costs. Even the signage posted at the register had a very rude toneto it. We will not be returning which is a shame since we used to love the food. Read more
I have loved jgumbos for years. This was my first time at this location and the guy taking my order seemed hurried and frantic... to get back to playing the game on his phone. I ordered the big bowl voodoo chicken. It was light on the meat and very dry. I?mvery dissatisfied and disappointed. I?ve never had a bad meal at jgumbos until now. Read more
No spice or chicken in the jean Lafitte burrito bowl. My po boy was two peices of burnt texas toast. And not enough chicken to... cover both peices that I had to put together my self. Read more
J Gumbos is a Cajun / Creole restaurant that is Mardi Gras themed. We discovered J Gumbos a few years ago when we lived in... Illinois and had never heard of them before, and even then I didn't know it was a chain. Fast forward a few years and I findthat there are quite a few in the Louisville area as well. We've been to this location a few times, and always on a Friday. Considering where it's located you'd expect it to be as busy as any other eatery long the Hurstbourne corridor, but we've neverencountered a crowd. When I say it's Mardi Gras themed, the interior is decorated colorfully with lots of green, yellow, andpurple, beads and masks. The decor is very festive. The menu isn't too extensive and the main entrees on the menu arerice-and-(insert item) based. All of entrees come with a sizable piece of fresh-toasted garlic bread as well. They have anumber of appetizers also (the nachos are excellent), and some Po' Boy sandwiches. The main entrees also come in a smaller sizefor those who have a smaller appetite. My personal favorite is the VooDoo Chicken. I must say, in all my years of eating spicyfoods in a fast/casual environment, the VooDoo Chicken is *the spiciest* thing I've ever encountered. This is an "order at thecounter and we'll bring it out to you" type of place, giving you time to get your beverage (they also offer a few bottled beers)and get settled in. It never takes long to get your food, and it is delivered HAWT and always flavorful. The staff is usuallypretty friendly, but on occasion distracted and basically just going through the motions. Not really a complaint, just anobservation. I also wish there were more menu options but, again, not a complaint. A salad, for instance, for someone with alighter appetite. J Gumbo's. Authenticate Cajun food and atmosphere with a side of Mardi Gras color for charm. Read more
Every time I come there's one of their guys that supposed to be behind the counter is watching videos on his phone, he's goes... right back after service. The rice is always hard, and I somehow keep getting the "occasional" soupier bowl with an imbalance inthe meat to sauce that is atypical of every other location. And most upsetting - they don't take the loyalty cards. Says "we'reeach self owned, so you can get it there or I can just give you a new card"...which I assume is useless at this location. Read more
