Reviews for HAKO in Lakewood, OH

Hands down the best sushi in Lakewood, and one of the better spots in the greater Cleveland area. It's a bit on the pricey side,... but you get what you pay for as the raw fish here is always incredibly fresh. I can't say the same for about 95% of sushirestaurants in NE Ohio as I've been to them all at this point and have been spoiled by hundreds of places in cities likeChicago, NYC, DC, and Dallas that have top notch sushi scenes and excellent Omakase options. In comparison half the time I'vebeen to Voodoo the salmon or tuna tastes old, and well fishy. You really need to judge a sushi place based on their sashimi andnigiri to properly judge sushi, as toppings and sauces easily mask the flavor of anything other than perfectly fresh fish.Specialty rolls are an American distraction in the same way that crunchy tacos are, while still tasty they are certainly notauthentic, nor are they real sushi. Hako is one of the rare spots that actually delivers on having consistently fresh fish andproper sashimi cuts that don't include the odds and ends that have no place in a proper sushi establishment. One of mine and my husbands favorite little gems in Lakewood. We live nearby in the area and went in on a whim one day to check... the place out since we are big fans of sushi and sashimi, plus we use to frequent here often back when it was Yuzu. After ourfirst visit there we have been going back religiously! The fish is always fresh and the owner is an absolute delight. They?vebeen short staffed recently so make sure to check ahead to see if they are offering take out only but whatever you do don?tthink twice about dining with this incredible establishment! The best sushi experience I have had. The spicy scallop roll was absolutely oustanding. The spicy California roll was a great... way to add zing to a classic. Though I only did carry out, the staff was so friendly and welcoming that I look forward todining in for my next visit, which will be soon. Read more

I was very excited to check out this sushi spot since I had read about it in a recent "new" restaurant review. I was very let... down. I've done sushi in Japan, all over the US, Canada, and the Caribbean, I know good sushi. Maybe I had too much of anexpectation, because this was just basic sushi. I knew the place was new, so I made a reservation for 7pm on 5/19. We got thereat 645pm and we didn't need the reservation, awesome. We got seated promptly and our server was very nice. We ordered the sushicombo, dynamite roll, and the Alaska roll at around 655pm. The place wasn't busy at all, there were two other tables sat, butthe occasional takeout order was picked up every so often. We started to wonder where are food was at about 715pm, because itdoesn't take that long to make this stuff, but we remained patient, maybe there is a good presentation I'm going to see? Finally, at 740pm I told my wife, "when I see the server I'm going to ask what's taking so long", when she came out again at745pm she had our food. Nearly an hour for what is pictured. Yeah, it didn't taste bad, the dynamite roll was very spicy, justhow I like it, but very underwhelming for waiting nearly an hour. It's sad to say, but I could have gone to Giant Eagle orHeinens for the exact same thing and without the LONG wait. We finished, the check came out to $48.49 + 9 for the server. Iworked as a server throughout college, I know none of my gripes were her fault, so I gladly tipped her for her job. While I waspaying the bill the table next to us commented when their two special rolls we delivered, "wow, that was quick!", which furtherannoyed me about the experience. We left very disappointed. There are much better places in the Cleveland area when it comes toservice and quality. The best place around is a small hole in the wall in Parma. Yes, Parma. It's called Mizu, and when I wasliving in Avon Lake I would drive the hour round trip for dine in and takeout all the time. Shinto, in Westlake Read more

HAKO is without a doubt the best place in the Cleveland-area for sushi and more. I frequently search for great places to eat and... when it comes to their cuisine, I have yet to find another that compares. It's clear that they care about quality and payattention to detail because the food is delicious and the customer service is excellent and very accommodating. Whether you areon the east, west, or south side of the city, eating here is absolutely worth the trip. Read more
