Reviews for Pickled Owl in Hurleyville, NY
This is an absolutely excellent restaurant. We have been spending a lot of time over the last year and a half in this area and... have tried many of the local restaurants and this is one that we come back to again and again. My 5 and 6 year old alwaysrequest it as well which is rare. Very nice and passionate couple own and work in the restaurant and you can feel theirattention to the details. (The husband is the chef) Great beer list and seasonal specials. Burger, beer bread, humus, fish andchips (which are off menu right now), Mac and cheese, fried local chicken are all worth trying. Highly recommend. Read more
Delicious food. Great service. Just strange that when we were seated we were told we have to wait 20 before ordering. They said... there were big tables with reservations ( although we had one as well). When we left there were only 2 tables with peopleinside. Never heard of begging told a place could not take your food order for 20 minutes Read more

Reviewing a Sullivan County business in the off-season is always a little tough, and hard to know what is fair. I visited for... lunch a week ago, arriving around 12:30. I wasn't sure if I should go in--since none of the three OPEN signs in the frontwindows were lit up. Inside, there were two ladies having a lunch meeting at the bar, and the bartender was also the onlyvisible employee. This man, was not the most professional greeter for the business. Friendly, yes, but also wearing acamouflage T-shirt that barely covered his belly. He directed me to the rear dining area, where I had my choice of the entireroom. Other than the chill from the two open windows in the room (it was about 30 out), I noticed the lack of any backgroundmusic, which made it feel rather uncomfortable and also made the soon to be long wait much, much longer. I ordered a sandwichfrom the lunch menu, and then proceeded to wait... And wait... And wait. While the sandwich that came out was fresh andwell-presented, I waited long enough that I think an employee drove down to Walmart to buy an avocado for my sandwich, and hadto wait in line. No worries, because I did bring my Kindle with me, but still... The fries were very tasty, and somehow, alittle charred, which was a nice touch. The pickle was fresh, and I think was brined with rosemary, but I can't be sure. Thesandwich was on a freshly grilled bun, and the ingredients were flavorful, but the avocado patty only covered about 2/3 of thebun, and it wasn't that large of a bun. The price of the sandwich was reasonable, even by Sullivan County standards. Some ofthe appetizers were overpriced, so I didn't order one. This is where the off-season remark comes in. I'm not sure if some ofthese failures are just because they don't bother with the niceties in the winter, saving their energy for the city money thatwon't be driving up for a couple of months, but it felt like they (he) was just phoning it in for the season. I'll give it anoth Read more
We were so looking forward to trying the food here, unfortunately, it was quite the disappointment. We placed the following... order to go : Cauliflower 12 Calamari 11 Gnocchi (vegan) 19 Veggie Burger 15 Side fries 5 Side mac and cheese 5 BrownieSundae 7 Total ~ $80 We were unpleasantly surprised when we got home and opened up our order. Not only were the to go boxesquite small, they were not even close to full. The pictures I attached will show you just how ridiculous their portions are forthe price. In terms of taste : The cauliflower was pretty good but mushy. The order of calamari had exactly 14 pieces - the wedid not even finish it because that's how bad they tasted. The Gnocchi had 11 pieces of gnocchi - again they were just ok butthe vegetables with it were very sweet and oily. The veggie burger was dry and just ok. The side fries were great and theportion was ok. The Mac and cheese had interesting flavor and was pretty good, however, the portion was about one big spoon ofMac and cheese... tiny. Finally the Brownie Sundae, which unfortunately we didn't get a chance to take a picture of, wasabsolutely delicious - it is so so good. In addition the amazing waitress was kind enough to have the sundae made only once Iarrived so that it would not melt entirely by the time we got home. Overall, The Pickled Owl food was a disappointingexperience. While some things were flavorful the majority left much to be desired and the portions in general are laughable. Ihate to leave a negative review for a local restaurant, but I would not want anyone else to be so let down. Read more
I never write reviews but I feel like this should be shared. My family and I came today to have a late lunch/early. We were... greeted by the bartender who said she?d be right with us; which she wasn?t. When she came to sit us, she asked me if I needed ahigh chair for my baby. I told her no she?s too small but thank you. She showed us our table and continued to bring a highchair. Guess she didn?t hear me or wasn?t listening? I don?t know. Anyway, she brought us water, a brunch menu (when brunch waswell over in my eyes we wanted a regular menu) and she never came back. We waited 20/25 minutes and decided to leave being wehad a young child and a baby with us. The place was busy. One other table and 3 people at the bar; which she was busy chattingup. We just did not feel important enough. Also walked past our table multiple times to the kitchen, grilled us and never askedif we were ready to order, had questions etc. We probably won?t be back.
