We were at the Holbrooke for a week and had a wonderful and restful time. The hotel staff are friendly, helpful and will go... out of their way to help. The room was very comfortable. The hotel restaurant is quite good. We ate there several times andthe food was fresh, flavorful and very well prepared. The atmosphere is relaxed, it is an easy place to spend time. Wenormally would not stay so long but we were here to visit a friend in the hospital. During the week, I broke my leg (not at thehotel) and the staff were extremely helpful and accomodating. If I ever return to Grass Valley I will certainly stay at theHolbrooke. Read more

Theming and decor were immaculate, as were the staff. Unfortunately the historic theming comes at a cost to guest... comfort. Although the building has been updated with modern fixtures, it is still a 100+ year old building with all the thinwalls and plumbing issues you?d expect for a structure that age. Expect to hear everything your neighbor is doing, and for themto hear you. The hotel tries to mitigate this issue with quiet hours, and by not providing televisions, but you can still here alot from fellow guests. The beautiful bathrooms feature period accurate clawfoot tubs which are gorgeous, but I would recommendopting for a room with a modern shower instead. They do offer some and the water pressure seems to be more reliable in those. They also control the temperature of each floor as opposed to each room. We were perfectly comfortable but it did get a bitchillier than some might like at night. The bar an restaurant offer top notch ambiance and as well. By and large the food wasphenomenal, but I would strongly discourage anyone from ordering the steel cut oatmeal for breakfast. The ?pickled blueberries?taste like they?ve been soaking in nail polish remover. It?s a flavor I wish I could un-taste. Try the huevos rancheros withbrisket, or the breakfast potatoes instead. Both were delicious. Read more

Unfortunately, I believe we?ve stayed our last stay at The Holbrooke this last Saturday night. We unknowing booked our rooms at... the same time as a wedding. The wedding was beautiful & we wish the couple lots of happiness. However, it would have been great if we were warned that this large event was happening before we booked. The warning should've included: beware-you will notsleep during your stay; your room walls, floor, toilet seat will all bounce and vibrate due to the music, yelling, and singingon the floor below; you will not have access to all of the hotel amenities; the wedding guests will eventually fill the hallsof the second floor to carry on the party after the reception without any consideration from them and/or the hotel staff. TheHolbrooke will apologize in the morning and say they are aware of the issue and are working on it. That they are 150 years oldand only 28 rooms. You?ll note on their website there isn?t TVs in the rooms. As they do not want any guests to be disturbed bythe noise. You?ll lay in bed that night and think to yourself ?Did I really just pay $300+ for my room & several more hundredeating here?? Had the Holbrooke given the ?warning? that there is a large event booked, would you like to pick another weekend?Or how about, we have a few discounted rooms if you would like to join us for a sleepless night. It would be a different storyand we would happily return for another stay. Read more

Our experience at the hotel was Amazing...we had my 60th birthday party in the Iron Door. The Entire staff were extremely... helpful and full of smiles. The food from the kitchen was outstanding and staged perfectly. Our room was extremely comfortableand very clean upon entering. The renovation work at the facility was exceptional, keeping the period finishes in tact whileperforming some required upgrading. I highly recommend this facility for events, dining, or a quick drink while visitingdowntown Grass Valley. Read more

We came in for drinks and a bite to eat ,I was bragging to my husband that when I visited this place a few years ago how much... fun it was Things have changed big renovation took the charm out it to me. We sat at the bar hoping for a drink and appetizer no problem getting 2 seats unfortunately we Sat 15 min looking at 2 bartenders making drinks and servering food at the bar making no effort to say hi will be soon or not a even a nod of the head. So left very disappointed . I have worked in the foodindustry all my life and presently work at a very busy up scale restaurant for 28 yrs and your place missed the boat onfriendly staff. I don't care how busy you are you acknowledge someone especially when someone has been sitting for 15 min withnothing. From Humboldt county Read more
