Reviews for Captain John Donlands Fish & Chips in East York, ON
Possibly the best fish and chips I?ve ever had! This place has become our number 1 go to for fish and chips! Never greasy (it?s... always been fried perfectly), and the fish is always buttery and delicious. Can?t miss out on the homemade coleslaw and tartarsauce as they are amazing too! Read more
Ordered takeout for 1 halibut (6 oz) with fries and 4 haddock (6 oz) with fries for 2 people. The batter to halibut ratio is... really good. Outside is crispy and inside is tender and flavorful. Both batter and fish is seasoned well. The Haddock is batterslightly thicker, but still taste pretty good. The fries portion is really big, so I would recommend getting 1 fries for 2people to share. Food is nicely packed for take out with paper boxes and hole punched paper bags to ensure crispiness. Theservice is really nice as well. I can't wait to come back for more. Read more
Absolutely the best fish and chips (or poutine) I've ever had. A must try in Toronto!
I usually order from this Fish and Chips place using a delivery service so normally it takes about ~30 minutes for the food to... arrive. The batter on the fish somehow has always arrived still crispy and flaky. Both the Halibut and Haddock were great, thefries were decent as well but the fish was the real star. Portion sizes are decent as well for the price. I've ordered from afew other fish places in Toronto but I find I always come back to the Capt every few months and it's been consistently good. First time here but not my last! I had the halibut & chips, coleslaw and gravy and everything was delicious. The portions of... everything was too much for one meal so I had leftovers. And the fish wasn't greasy. Also, they put the fish in a bag with holesso that the steam can escape. After a 30 minute drive home my meal wasn't soggy! The best part was how nice the owners were. They only have malt vinegar packages so when I asked for white, the wife was so kind as to put some in a cup for me to takehome. I spoke to a long time customer while waiting for my food and he said their's is the best and cheapest fish and chips formiles. Read more
Love this place! I've been here twice for takeout already (and attached photos from each order). Got the 5 piece halibut family... pack with fish, chips, housemade tartar sauce and coleslaw the first time, and got the 10 piece haddock family pack (fish, chips, sauce and coleslaw) and some onion rings the second time. If you don't know your fish (like me), halibut is more firm, haddock is more flaky. Both were absolutely delicious! Light, crispy batter, great quality fish. Each time, we walked over, ordered there and then walked around until it was ready, and then walked back with our food. Even after a 20minute walk in snow, wind and -11°C weather, food was still hot and crispy when we got home! Their housemade tartar sauce and coleslaw are so good,we're definitely going to grab extra next time. There was a bit of a wait each time to pick up around rush hour since there'susually only 2 people working hard frying, packing and taking orders. But the owners are super friendly and considering the lineout the door from locals and 3rd party delivery, it really says something about the quality of the food. Read more
One of the best pieces of Halibut we have had in a while. The fries were fresh and cooked perfectly. We also tried the onion... rings, made in-house and not those frozen ones in a bag, again, very good. The poutine was tasty and not swimming in gravy, thankfully, with a generous amount of cheese. We will definitely be making this a go-to place when we are wanting fish andchips. They were also nice enough to give us some crackling when asked. Read more
