Food was geat. I ordered the Jambalaya. Excellent flavor, but had to let it sit for a few minutes because it was extremely... hot. Only complaint was that there were only 2 pieces of shrimp in the entire bowl. On brightside, they did make up for itwith an abundance of anduoille sausage. Not to mention the lemonade was excellent as well. The waitress did her best, as shewas the one there besides the barista who helped with drinks, who had multiple tables of 10 or more people. Not sure if theywere just under staffed or people called in sick today. But obviously they were not prepared for lunch. So it was a littleslow. Other than that, it was really good. I enjoyed the food but was a bit disappointed with the wasabi potato salad as there's been a recipe change or something and it... doesn't have as strong a wasabi flavor as it previously did. Read more
Great local bar atmosphere, with a nice laid back setting. Great dishes to go along with good drinks and service.
I live in the neighborhood and eat here frequently. Went in mid Sat pm for a drink and sandwich. Two drunks and the owner... sitting several feet apart at the bar. Continually loud. Profanity laced language. Complained to the waitress. She didn?t care. I will not return. Read more
Given the scarcity of late-night food options in Des Moines, Star Bar is one of the few places that you can still get a solid... meal even when you're not eating at a healthy hour. We've tried just about everything on the menu and everything offer on themenu is exactly as described. One of our favorite dishes on the menu is still the Star Burger. A no nonsense good baconcheeseburger made with super fresh ingredients for a superb taste. We usually substitute the regular fries for the garlicparmesan fries instead. The beers on tap rotate throughout the year, but we haven't seen the Spaten Oktoberfest for a whilenow. Service is solid as others have pointed out and there's ample parking behind the restaurant. Another typical iowa restaurant same decor & menu as everyone else. I made the mistake of ordering a so called cuban sandwich... and as u can see in picture it looks nothing like one. The meat was tough I only ate about 2 or 3 bites that's all I couldstomach I paid the bill and went home hungry sat down to a PB&J sandwich that was 10 times better. On the plus side water wasat star bar was pretty decent. Read more
