Reviews for The Eklund Hotel and Restaurant in Clayton, NM
My husband and I recently stayed at the Eklund on our way to Colorado. The room was clean, the mattress was not great. I loved... the jacuzzi tub, although a little weird to get in the shower, if you had a disability you might not be able to step over tub touse shower. We had a hard time getting someone on the phone to check us in when we arrived. The restaraunt food was not good..Iordered a chicken sandwich, it tasted like a frozen Tyson patty. The breakfast was sparse. Do not think I would stay again. Read more
Exceeded my expectations! Well kept, clean rooms, good shower pressure, super comfy bed & sheets. The only suggestion I have is... to have a full length mirror or even just a second mirror in the room. The history in this place is incredible and the bartendermakes a killer Chilton. Oh, they also have vegetarian green and red chili as well as vegetarian appetizers and entrées. Highlysuggest staying here???????? Read more
Wonderful hotel. It is a historic hotel, so don't expect perfection. The floors creek, the walls are thin, and, being located... adjacent to a highway intersection and train tracks, you are not well insulated from their sounds. BUT, for me, they add to theexperience. Our room (207) was full of modern amenities, and everything worked as it was supposed to. However, there is nofridge, no coffee maker, no microwave, and the TV was tiny. There is a balcony shared by the 4 front, 2nd level rooms, which wasgreat except that the curtains didn't fully block anyone from seeing inside or room. I was instructed by the manager not tosmoke "anything" on the balcony. No doubt in part because there is a cannabis dispensary 2 doors down. No problem, they have alovely outdoor smoking area. There is a restaurant and a historic saloon on premises, but are only open on Friday and Saturday. They serve an enhanced continental breakfast to hotel guests every day, but the only low-carb thing available is a crustlessquiche that is made to order. The breakfast room attendant is very knowledgeable about the history, professional, however, shecould use some people skills. There is no coffee maker in the rooms, so we toddled down to the breakfast room with our cupswhere we were jumped on and scolded for bringing or own cups, and then treated like riff-raff. The attendant demanding to knowour room number. The breakfast was unappealing, so we just left and got our breakfast on the road. Overall, we would definitelystay here again. Read more
Really cute historic hotel for a great price. The room was comfortable and clean. The hotel keeper was exceedingly kind and... friendly. The breakfast was good, though keep in mind everything was pre-made and you pick what you want and heat it up in themicrowave; excellent coffee. Read more

This review is for the hotel, not the restaurant, just FYI. Apparently this hotel is haunted! I cannot speak to these... long-standing rumors via direct experience, but the Hotel Eklund is supposedly haunted by a former maid named Irene, who hungherself in room 307. My fiancee and I stayed next to it in 308 and, aside from some creaky floors, I can say that it was aunique and enjoyable experience that was free of anything supernatural. The decor simply cannot be beat, however. After all,how often are you able to stay in an old west saloon hotel, replete with saloon doors, the remnants of old gas lamps, and evenleftover bullet holes?! Proprietor Keith was lovely to work with and as creepy as some of the decor can seem, he and his staffmake it every bit a welcoming environment for a great stay! Read more
I decided to splurge to stay in this historic hotel instead of the good-enough non-chain motel out on the highway. But it wasn't... worth the added cost. The public spaces are nicely restored, but the rooms have almost no historical character -- just not veryfunctional and ugly furniture containing the hotel's "E" monogram. There's a reading chair but no nearby lamp. There are noscreens in the windows. The rooms are no better than a motel room, worse in some ways. The hotel provides a free breakfast forguests, but it was also disappointing. Everything but the coffee and oatmeal was refrigerator cold. If you wanted anything warmyou had to put it in the microwave. They offer breakfast burritos, but all contain meat. Not everyone wants meat. Egg and potatoburritos aren't unusual. The hotel's restaurant menu suggests it knows that it is likely to attract some vegetarians, butapparently that hasn't occurred to them for breakfast. Last, it's wrong to add a $4.20 credit card fee to a bill withoutinforming the customer. Moreover, no place charging $105 and up for a room should charge a credit card fee. It's not like mostof us walk around with that much cash. Read more
What a wonderful historical space! The details and furnishings match the turn of the century architecture. The staff was... personable and felt like family! Live music in the saloon while we ate dinner! Read more
