Reviews for The Glunz Tavern in Chicago, IL

This tavern is historic, but don’t eat. We went for lunch Sunday and were served food that should have made the restaurant... embarrassed. The menu was not as posted online: a stripped down version which was disappointing but we thought we would still befine. But the quality and value turned out to be uncomfortably bad. Top of the list was an $18 entree-priced schnitzel sandwichwith lingonberry on brioche (sounds nice?)… which turned out a slider-sized chicken-puck looking portion on a 5-inch appetizerplate, no plating. Bun that looked like it came from jewel. No fries (the server had said yes, it did come with fries), whichwhat appeared to be a packaged mayonnaise. Literally thought they sent the wrong item. Our server (who was kind throughout),even looked embarrassed when she sat down the sandwich “These used to be a lot bigger.” The brat they sent was supposed tobe “grilled” and was in fact, boiled to mush and served on a dry hot dog bun. The cheese fries were served in a bowl withwhat looked like a pump cheese in the middle - would have been happy with these from a street food cart perhaps. Turns out theowner was in the house and she said she’d ask him to stop over. We watched him turn her down and send her back to us to say“food prices are expensive” and then he walked away and ignored us. I felt terrible for the server who was put in themiddle. This was unreasonable. We know what we should pay in Chicago for good food and happy to do so. This was below theprofessional standard. We walked in positive and walked out negative. The historic pub and family story here is cool. Enjoyingan Oktoberfest beer in this space, probably would have simply enjoyed. But the food experience was in the realm of embarrassingfor an established restaurant. Ps - looking back at some old photos of food on these reviews, these look much better. Fullsized portions, etc. Nothing like our actual experience, so it seems like something has declined. Read more

Not great. Food is way overpriced given the portions! Would recommend eating somewhere else nearby and just having a drink here.

The beer and staff were good. Issue I had was the food portions. It felt like it was mockery. We order the 2 sausages and it... came with a side of potatoes for $20 bucks. It was literally the smallest amount of side for the price. 7 very small cut uppotatoes. It was joke. We were also charged for items we didn’t order and had to get it awkwardly corrected. Honestly won’tgo back but our waiter was good which is why he is the only reason I gave it a 2 star. Read more

Bartender was too busy chatting with a patron to pour the beer I had ordered with the server. She had to ask him several times,... but nope no urgency. 15 minutes passed before they served me the end of the tap with a glass full of foam. A Germanestablishment that doesn’t know how to pour a beer! Won’t be returning Read more

Stopped in for an afternoon drink with my wife. Enjoyed a beer and a Glunz label Scotch. The homemade potato chips were a tasty... accompaniment. Read more

Nice and old place right on the corner of Division and Wells street where OLD TOWN starts. Good collection of beers and wines.... You can also find almost all the liquors here. This is an Austrian/German place. I really liked their food menu butunfortunately we did not order anything. Outdoor patio seating available. Read more

Good selection of authentic wursts. Large beer selection with a very reasonable price. The French soup is the clams to fame... here, and they don’t come up short. In addition the staff has always been very friendly and attentive, the 5 or so times Ihave been. Definitely will return Read more
