Reviews for TenGoku Aburiya in Chicago, IL
TenGoku Aburiya is my favorite Japanese restaurant in Chicago. Their portions, prices, and overall execution is stellar. Sake... list is excellent as well. They offer carafes and bottles for reasonable prices. If you are looking for an authenticJapanese/Korean experience, I would highly recommend TenGoku. Their savory dishes are always on point, particularly the Robatadishes like Tsukune and Gyutan. The classic comfort noodle dish Suki Yaki was a touch too sweet, but it was still verytasty. My son and I are obsessed with their sushi. The quality of their sushi is always high. Rice is nicely cooked as well.Service is very helpful, and they give you enough space to eat and enjoy your time there. I have been there several times, and Ilook forward to going again soon. We came in for around happy hour and had the agedashi tofu and chicken karaagre. The tofu was excellent - chicken was good. We... later ordered the omakase sashimi and the omakase kushiyaki, which was so delicious. I would highly recommend this place. Myfavorite was the scallops and mackerel sashimi, agedashi tofu and the beef-wrapped mushroom kushiyaki Read more

We came in for the Omakase - A progressive meal with Japanese dishes that moves to nigiri and then dessert. We sat at the chefs... counter and have a fantastic time. The chawanmushi- savoury egg custard and the agedashi tofu in yuzu were my favouritecourses. Thank you to the chefs for a great meal. Tengoku has a variety of grilled skewers as well that I can’t wait to comeback and try. Read more
If your palette is calling for authentic Japanese food, Tengoku Aburiya is the place! Quality definitely takes precedence over... quantity and our dining experience truly brought back fond memories of our stay in Japan! A decent selection of sakes, ahandful of authentic Japanese beers and delectable selection of sashimis, nigiris, sushis & grilled meat skewers. Our server wasamazed at the amount of food we managed to order and polish off! The highlight was the “Ana-Ebi-shooter”, a shot of sweetshrimp, ikura & quail egg. The ambience took us back to the food district pockets of Kobe city. Word has it that their fish isimported daily. Pricey but worth every penny. ????Ebi shooter ????Zuke tuna ????Beef skewer ????Che’s special nigiriset ????Jigoku Maki ????Maze Soba ( not pictured ) ????Tengoku ( spicy ) ????chef’s platter ( skewers of Shitake mushroomswrapped with beef, pork belly, chicken ( good ol’ tori-niku), peppers. Overall food was authentic and delicious, just too pricey. We focused on izakaya items and skipped sushi (as you get more bang... for your bucks to just have sushi at omakase yume next door, which is awesome btw) Favorites: • skewers - good variety, everything was well executed; gyutan and negima were both grilled to their perfect tenderness; tsukune was flavorful and the eggyolk dip was very authentic • sesame pudding - don’t skip if it’s on the menu; they used white sesame for the pudding andblack sesame for the ice cream; perfect balance between warm and cool, with super rich sesame aroma • potato salad - flavorwise exactly what you would get from an izakaya in japan, would like a bit more texture/chunkiness though OK items: • whitefish usuzukiri - really fresh fish with refreshing sprouts and shiso, sesame oil too over powering • kale miso salad -balanced family style salad • black cod - flavor was good, but on the oily side and slightly overcooked Will not orderagain: • shishamo Read more
Cute ambiance, the food was pretty tasty, but the portions were too small and left us generally unsatisfied. Our favorite was... probably the maze soba, lots of good flavors—though we only ordered it because we were still hungry after the 7-8 items weordered to share between the four of us. The grilled skewers pricing seemed a bit high as the price is just for one skewer perorder. Read more
I highly don’t recommend this restaurant. The portions are extremely small, the sea urchin and roe in Ikura-Uni don are not... fresh, and the skewers are expensive and small. The Sukiyaki costs more $35 but is only enough for one person and tastes supersalty. In addition, the service attitude of the waiters was terrible. The tea was not allowed to be refilled, and the storecharged us a mandatory 20% tip. We have six people and it cost everyone $100+ to get almost full. Won’t go to this restaurantagain. Read more
