Reviews for The Compass in Carlsbad, CA
This gastropub restaurant is located upstairs in the Village Fare shopping mall in Carlsbad. Stopped by for lunch & tried some... of their unique menu items. The beef skewers on saffron rice was pretty tasty ???? The California burrito was bomb & they evenhave vegan menu items. Read more
Everything was delicious. If you are vegetarian they have many options. I highly recommend their macaroni and cheese. It is... homemade with a variety of cheeses. The ambiance is inviting but it is a small restaurant so I recommend to go on a weekday atnight. Their main course menu is limited but if you want to share appetizers and have a drink, their appetizers and drink menuhas a number of interesting items. Read more
Enjoyed the gyozas, as well as the mac and cheese! The salad was big enough to share, the shrimp wasn?t as well grilled as I... would prefer but pretty decent. Read more
Spark notes: ? I?ve frequented only twice recently ? First time was amazing ? Second time we didn?t get greeted by a server and... left after 20 minutes ? Food IS amazing ? Based on all the 5 star reviews and my first experience, I would recommend you give ita shot! Full Story: Visited this place the night prior. I gotta say, The food was phenomenal! Had the steak, it was cookedabsolutely perfect along with the salad and home-made dressing which paired insanely well with the steak. Our server just sohappened to also be our bartender that night. He?s always been amazing from what I can remember visiting many many years ago. Both my food and experience was so great, I had to bring the wife to try the food the very next night! Tonight we were greetedby a very nice hostess. She walked us in at exactly 8:20 and we chose the second booth to the right. The place was moderatelybusy but not completely packed out with a few available tables to choose from. We figured it would take a moment to get service.10 minutes went by, no one greeted us. No big deal as we didn?t know the wait staff situation. 15 minutes went by. Waitstaff atthis point passed our table about a dozen tomes. 20 minutes went by, we decided at that point to leave. Would have been willingto wait substantially longer had we at least been greeted. But, literally no eye contact, no ?hey, bear with us while we getcaught up?, nothing! We felt like a burden and left at 8:40 to go next door for Gonzo Ramen. Maybe this was just an off night.I?m guessing so based on the many 5 star ratings. My first experience was so amazing that I would be willing to give this placeanother try, and even more than willing to change my review/rating. My soul purpose for writing this review is, If I were thebusiness owner of this fine establishment, I would want to know. Read more
Food challenges. There are just times when you scan a menu and just know that you have got to try something. It?s as if that... item is screaming your name. Literally daring you to order it. It was that way for us during a recent visit to ?The Compass.? Located in the heart of the Carlsbad Village, its menu boasts a few items that demand your attention. First up was the ?VeganCorn Dogs.? While we don?t recall a typical hot dog being accused of containing any actual meat, apparently clarification wasin order. While our expectations weren?t high, we accepted this food challenge primarily out of curiosity and were quitepleasantly surprised. They were tasty and came adorned with artistic dollops of bougie mustard choices. Next up was the ?BeastBurger.? Some say that opposites attract, and unlike our appetizer, this item will never risk the accusation of being meatless.Offering a blend of elk, bison, boar, and kobe, this burger is proud of its meat heritage and lineage. Fair warning, the ?spicyjam? will sneak up on your taste buds and announce its presence. This food challenge was accepted and is now calling YOU out.Fear not and remember that ?The Compass? won?t point you in the wrong direction. And that?s?Henry?s Take. I love this place! Great cocktails, good lineup of craft beer, pretty good food as well. The atmosphere here is great, notably... without a TV. Go to this place to enjoy these things with your company. While the ambiance was fine by me before, the interioris now refreshed. ???????? Read more
This is a great bar and restaurant in downtown Carlsbad. One of the few places that is open late. This is a great restaurant... with a delicious food menu. But it also has a great drink list. So don?t feel obligated to eat because a lot of people go therejust to drink. It?s a little pricey, but very on par for downtown Carlsbad. Parking is difficult for any place in this area oftown so it?s smart to always budget more time for finding a spot. Read more
