Reviews for Ellie\'s Kitchen + Bar in Calgary, AB
I loved my time at Ellie\'s!! The ambience and the decor were lovely. All of the staff were super friendly and welcoming. I also... had the pleasure of meeting one of the owners.\n\nThe food was AMAZING. I had the suya tacos and I think that is now myfavourite thing ever. The suya was suya-ingggg, made me feel like I was in Lagos again. I also had the rum ribs with mashedpotatoes. The ribs were so soft and literally fell off the bone. The mashed potatoes were so creamy which I also loved.\n\nItfelt really good to experience West-African/Caribbean food in a high-end setting in Cal. Overall, I loved my experience and Ihave to bring my friends here! Read more
Ellie\'s is such a unique, aclectic experience. From the moment we arrived, the staff made sure that we were well taken care of.... They were warm, friendly, and knowledgable.\n\nNow let\'s talk about the food... AMAZING. Especially the Suya beef. We alsoordered the:\n- Jamaican patties\n- Jerk Chicken\n- Jollof\n- puff puff\n- rum cake\n\nEverything was tasty and really capturedthe flavours of the Caribbean and West Africa. The drinks were also great as they had popular cocktails with a Caribbean/WestAfrican twist. I absolutely loved the Sorrel Sour. Such a tasty twist on one of my favourite Jamaican beverages.\n\nIt washeartwarming and impressive to see West African - Caribbean cuisines fused and represented in modern fine dining.\n\nIthoroughly enjoyed the ambience and live music here. The vibe was incredible. The management and owner made sure to check in onus and just wanted to make sure we were having a great time.\nThey expressed how they are continuously improving to ensure theirguests have a wonderful experience.\n\nThe decor was beautiful and the Ellie\'s team is really bringing something unique andspecial to the Calgary food/lounge scene. Anytime I\'m in Calgary this is where I\'ll be. Read more

Came here on opening night and the interior was very spacious and nicely decorated.\n\nWaitstaff were very friendly, but seemed... slightly unprepared (e.g. did not know the draft beers on tap when asked).\n\nWe ordered the beef suya, kelewele, and goatpepper soup for appetizers, and the jerk chicken for the main.\n\n- Beef suya: Beef was a bit chewy but spice rub was veryflavorful. Onion salad was underwhelming because it was just raw sliced onions with no vinaigrette.\n\n- Kelewele: Friedplantain was very yummy ? would order again. However, the portion size was a bit lacking given the price. (This was served onthe same plate as the Beef suya.)\n\n- Goat pepper soup: Broth was very flavourful, but the goat was very difficult to cut/chewand was bony. This dish also did not get served until 10-15 minutes after we had finished our main dish of the night, despitebeing ordered as an appetizer.\n\n- Jerk chicken: Chicken was very well seasoned but was served lukewarm. The sides that camewith the dish (sliced carrot/bell peppers, jollof rice) were not the same as the ones specified on the menu (fried plantain, cabbage slaw, jollof rice). The sliced carrot/bell peppers were very hard and almost seemed uncooked. Jollof rice was very good? I would order the rice again alone.\n\nThe assistant manager, Olivia, was friendly and checked in with us frequentlythroughout the night, making sure we had been attended to.\n\nIt was nice to try a new cuisine (seems authentic) but overall, the experience did not match the price we paid and the \"fine dining\" branding. Beautiful, newly renovated modern space. Enjoyed trying out a new cuisine - we had the jerk chicken (came with jollof rice),... beef suya, kelewele, goat pepper soup, and chocolate puff puffs.\nHighlight was definitely the jerk chicken (juicy and tastyeven without the sauce) and the goat pepper soup (super flavourful broth, but the meat is a bit bone heavy and chewy)\nWouldgive a 4star rating, but the service was a bit slow considering we were one of two tables in an otherwise empty restaurant.Understand that we came on opening night, so probably still a few things to iron out ;)\n\nLoved everything otherwise! What an honour to be able to come to the very first night of this chic, modern restaurant!\n\nElegance only begins to describe... this amazing new restaurant! The staff are friendly and enthusiastic. They operate with a true sense of pride andpurpose.\n\nThe chefs are actually from Ghana and Jamaica and use the very best authentic ingredients from those countries tocreate heaven on your plate.\n\nThe Jerk Chicken is spicy and succulent! It is so tender that there is no need for a knife. Justa fork will do. It comes with a traditional rice dish and will absolutely fill you up.\n\nThis restaurant has a bright futureand should garner lots of local support! Read more
