The tacos are small but the prices are fair. The meat is really good and the portions are? meh ok. I give it 4 stars because the... couple working the spot is really friendly and you can tell they are preparing the food with love and respect. The portions areon the low side but honestly I rather it be this way than they raise the prices cause I wouldn?t come if they did. Update:prices went up portions stayed the same. That friendly atmosphere is gone and it?s now a chaotic mess of people wanting birriaand they barely being able to keep up with he work load. Time to find a new birria spot! Read more

La Birrieria Red Tacos is a taco shop in a Calexico strip mall specializing in northern Baja-style birria de res (beef birria),... a flavorful Mexican beef stew made by braising beef with guajillo chiles and other spices. Here, "Birria Tacos" are referred toas "red tacos" due to the color the corn tortillas take when they're dipped into the skimmed layer of rendered fat from thebirria before they're warmed on the plancha. The "Birria Tacos" here are pretty good due to the birria, which has a robusthome-cooked quality, while being less garlicky and less insinuating than the beef birrias I've had in Tijuana, San Diego, andLos Angeles. Aside from being a touch more piquant than I've come to expect, this is a straightforward birria without a lot ofnuance, which will likely ensure its acceptance by most people who try it. The tacos are sauced with a fresh salsa roja duringthe taco assembly. Chopped onions and cilantro are added assuming you don't refuse them. You can ask for the birria tacos to bemade as "Quesatacos," essentially birria in tortillas with melted cheese. I was not a fan of the cheese used here, which I foundto be a bit too funky. I'm accustomed to a milder cheese in these types of tacos. Let the flavor of the birria dominate thetaco, not the cheese. I advise readers to stick to the regular tacos for this reason. A savory "Consommé" (made from thestrained beef birria broth) is provided for free with your order of tacos. It takes well to lots of freshly-squeezed limewedges, and can be eaten like a soup, as well as used to dip the birria tacos into. If you take away nothing else from myreviews of birria taco joints, remember to ALWAYS ask for the consommé. This is a relatively new restaurant. The owner wasfriendly and told me business has been good, which was not surprising to me given the quality of the Birria Tacos; he's openeveryday except when he's catering on Saturdays. La Birrieria Red Tacos was moderately busy with locals at around 2pm o Read more
