Reviews for A J Spurs Saloon & Dining Hall in Buellton, CA
I was really excited to try this steakhouse when I saw it on the way into town. We decided to eat here on our last evening here.... I was very disappointed. It was underwhelming and overpriced. The staff was very nice and helpful but the food is very mediocre. We both had the ?Little Joe? which came with vaquero soup which was very salty, beans and a salad, then with the steak was friedpotato rounds, rice and garlic bread. Steak was thin and tasted marinated, which wasn?t horrible but I expected a steak thattasted grilled from a restaurant like this. I couldn?t finish it so I brought it with me but I don?t think I want to eat thatagain. We sat by the fireplace near the bar and my husband counted 3 little ?visitors? scramble past. I wasn?t at all surprisedthough. Dessert was included but I was so full from soup and salad that we opted for the shot of amaretto with Kahlua i believe. That was the best thing I had here. Basically overpriced dennys fare. Read more
Just incredible! Stopped in for dinner tonight on vacation trip and we absolutely made the right decision. Steak, potato, salad,... veggie soup and black beans.. delicious! The staff was incredible and it was a great first experience. I highly recommend. Read more
This is a 4.5? restaurant. We would go there often years ago before moving away, and returned for a visit. The beans, soup,... salsa, and salad are excellent. It is cowboy-style cooking, so not typical steakhouse flavor. I should have asked for my child'ssteak cooked more rare, as kids are averse to charring on their food. The Sidekick is plenty of food if you don't need your ownmeat entree. You get rice pilaf, garlic bread, spuds (sliced roasted/baked potatoes with onions), and a root beer float orliqueur. I liked the spuds dipped in a side of ranch, they tasted airy and light like a baked potato, but others in my partysaid they were dry and unseasoned. The waitress offered us fresh spuds to take home, along with our leftover soup, which theyallow you to take home. I asked the hostess as we were leaving if the spuds had changed recently, and she said that they hadchanged a few times depending on their supplier, but she recommended trying the baked potato (that is what they used to give forspuds) and asking for vegetable medley instead of rice and bread. I do intend to go back and try it that way since everythingelse there is so good. Read more
When you enter the restaurant they have stuffed animals as decor throughout. Inside has a very western log cabin feel. The... portions are large. We order a kids burger and kids popcorn shrimp. These are more than enough to feed an average adult. We alsogot the 35oz Gambler topped with grilled mushrooms, peppers, and onions. Note than enough for a family to share. Same with thehalf rack of ribs we ordered. The food is good. I was get impressed on how well cooked the meat were for the size of it. Thestaff there is very nice and friendly. It was a bit pricey but overall a good dining experience. Read more
Wow, we stopped here on our way back from Solvang, CA and I must say, it was worth it.It starts with a cowboy stew with beans... and salsa. Then a nice garden salad. Then I had a full rack of pork ribs and it was way more than I expected. Very good! My wifeand Aunt had the "Tombstone" (sirloin steak) and Uncle had the liver and onions. I gotta say, if you're passing through, this isa worthwhile stop!!! Read more
This is the best place ever. The staff is outstanding and friendly and there is so much food. We got the ribs and they were... tender and moist. The soup was so good and the salad was yummy. I get blue cheese salad dressing and I was so impressed with allthe blue cheese. The choice of desert was great. I got the after dinner liquor and my husband got the sundae. So you get soup, salad, potatoes, rice, main course, and dessert. It was well worth the money. And there is so much food we only bought one maincourse and a side kick which means you get one main dish but everything else you get the same things. Read more

This is definitely a place to visit when in town, at least once. The meal was delicious. It included four courses: appetizer... with soup, beans, salsa; salad, main course, and dessert that includes root beer float or liqueur. The appetizer would be fineas a meal on its own. Perhaps light on the protein, but it is an appetizer. The sides with the soup were actually very tastyand adds to the soup if you mix them together. My Filet Mignon was cooked slightly more to order and tasted great. Thepotatoes were very good and the rice was fine. The Texas toast was an interesting touch. Others in my party enjoyed theirmeals as well and commented that it was the best steak they've had in a long time. Two in my party ordered a special that wasso much, they carted it off in several leftover containers. Service was awesome and very friendly. We had plenty of time tovisit and have conversations. Not sure if it was because of slow service, or realization we were having a work event. Everyonewas satisfied and happy to have had a meal together at this location. I would definitely bring another party back to thislocation next time I'm in town with a group. Read more
