Went here for lunch. I have never had a good experience with bbq (having only tried places in the northeast) so i had guarded... expectations, so i was so happy and surprised when the food was great! I got the bbq spaghetti, texas caviar (a cold black eyedpea and pepper mix), and burnt ends. There were 2 slightly different kinds of bbq sauce that came with it. Or maybe it was justtwo things of the same sauce? anyways, the burnt ends were great, there were some beautifully fatty pieces and some quite leanand crisped up pieces. The flavour for both types of burnt ends were great though i preferred the fattier ones. BBQ spaghettiwas a huge surprise and highlight for me, a sweet and spiced sauce coated the spaghetti and there were some crisped up parts ofthe spaghetti to serve as textural contrast. Personally I didn't like the texas caviar much. it was slightly vinegary and theblack eyed peas were a great texture, but I just didn't find it too exciting. Nothing was wrong with it in particular. Myfriend got the fried catfish with mac n cheese and slaw, all of which tasted great to me as well. The catfish was coated in avinegary sauce. The lady who served us was really nice as well. If I have the chance, I will definitely return to try theirother offerings. Read more

Man. Those burnt ends with the Texas sauce was the BEST I've had in Boston - hands down! Tasty collards, but the Mac and cheese... missed the mark for me. Good people and easy ordering experience. All in all, I'd come back any day of the week. Read more

This area has a lot of business so most restaurants are geared towards that audience so finding a good small BBQ place was... really nice. The brisket was very tender with strong smokey flavor. Coleslaw was vinegar based which isn't personal preference. But the sweet potato fries were fantastic and crispy. Not soggy like most places that serve sweet potato fries. Definitely worthhitting up if you're in the area around lunch time Read more

This past weekend My wife, brother in law, and I were at the FANEXPO at the Boston Convention center. After a long day of... nerding out, we left the convention center to look for some food before we made the trip back home (Connecticut). We stumbledupon Larry J's and decided to give it a shot. My wife ordered first. Who I can only assume was Larry J took our order and hegave my wife some attitude when she asked for a description of some of the BBQ sauces. He told her that they were listed on themenu (not on the board in the window) and pushed a menu towards us. I figured maybe its a common question and he's sick ofrepeating it. After she ordered I was trying to read the menu while ordering and I guess I wasn't loud enough which is whenLarry decided to give me attitude saying "you've been looking at the menu for 10 minutes! You should know what you want to orderby now!". I was still on the fence on a few things so I just wanted to make a last minute decision so I started to speak up whenI ordered and he continued to just give me attitude while speaking over me. That is when I just stopped ordering and said "Youknow what? We're done here" and we just walked away... After looking at some of these reviews and experiencing Larry for myself, its no wonder there was plenty of seating. Literally every restaurant around there was packed but Larry J's. After I walked awaymy Brother-in-law told me that Larry said he was "joking". Well after a long day and being hungry it sure didn't seem funny. Infact it seemed arrogant and degrading.... Some advice to Larry - Smile and treat people with respect. It will go a long way. Asfor now, I definitely cannot recommend this place, especially with SO many better options anywhere in Boston. The hidden BBQ stand in the middle of a park. I ordered a combo #2 and saw that everybody was raving over the burnt ends so I... picked that up as well. The reviews were right, the burnt ends were the best I've tried. I had sides of candied yam, mac andcheese, rice, and coleslaw--all what you would expect in a good southern BBQ. The lines did become a bit long and many orderscame flying in because the food is that good. My advice, plan ahead. Expect some waiting as the husband and wife juggle thewindow orders and online orders, so order a bit more because you dont want to miss out. On a side note, a rabbit in the parkkept me company while waiting. I wanted to get seconds while eating, but I didn't want to contend with another wait. I know I'llhave to visit again to fulfill my BBQ needs. Did I mention the burnt ends? It's been hours and I'm still thinking aboutthem. They close up at around 7:30PM if the orders stop despite their sign saying 9PM for some nights. The owner even came outto the patrons to apologize of the wait and to see how we were doing when their was a lull in the ordering. His voice is deepand loud, so I can understand how it could be mistaken as rude, but he was really sincere and kind. It was also interesting tohear that he had friends in Guam where I'm from. As their motto says, it's fresh food, not fast food. Read more

Hit the spot! Perfectly smoked chicken and brisket, greens and not overly sweet candied yams. The owner was friendly and... engaging as was his lovely wife. We'll be back! Read more
