Ever head out in search of an authentic, high-end Italian dinner only to end up rolling your eyes at a menu full of “Chicken... Parm,” “Mama’s Meatballs,” or “Seafood Aldredo?” Want to know how the other half of Italy (south of Rome) eats? Headto Bar Volpe in South Boston, where you’ll find a ton of dishes you’ll never see in the North End. The restaurant’swood-fired ovens provide a rustic, smoke-infused flavor into each dish. No piles of Parmesean cheese, cream, or red meat here… just solid plates of rustic, agrarian and seafood-inspired meals that will change the way you think about what “Italianfood” means. I started with a Boulevardier cocktail (Four Roses bourbon, Cinzano, Campari, and bitters). Appetizers wereFagioli (pole beans) with garlic, red flake, and cherry pepper vinaigrette and a spinach and artichoke panzerotti with a sugotomato sauce. On to a bottle of Sicilian white which was very crisp and clean and reminded me of the no-label bottles whichappear at your table on the Amalfi Coast. My wife ordered the smoked eggplant raviolis for her primi. A highlight for me was myRigatoni All’Amatricanna – the late summer tomatoes combined with the wood smoke from the oven tossed with with theamazingly fresh pasta provided a depth of flavor and texture which was simply amazing. We split the grilled whole-fish Branzinofor our main. This dish took us right back to Campania. The mixture of a the delicate white fish, the briney castelvetrano olives, and sweet acidity of pepperonata was just the best plate I’ve had in a long time. Masterful execution of seasoning with herbs and acidic ingredients. Came in for dinner this past weekend. The restaurant and a... cozy and inviting atmosphere, and our server was also very friendly. My friend and I shared 6 dishes and started off with one oftheir signature mozzarella appetizer - marinated mozzaerlla. The combination of mozzarella, olives, and cracker was basic, yetthe trio was an excellent bite to set the tone for the meal. Seasoning was minimal for both the arancini and the panzerotti, butwe also enjoyed these as well. All the entrées and the pasta we ordered had perfect amount of acidity that compensated for thelightly seasoned sauces. The squid ink pasta and the mussels were our favorites, and we were especially impressed with theshrimp butter toasts that came with the mussels. If you’re looking for dishes with strong flavors and emphatic finishes, foodhere may taste a tad bland. However, if you want to experience interesting and complicated flavors, I would highly recommendtrying them out. Read more
After enjoying Fox & the Knife, we were excited to try Bar Volpe. We were lucky enough to snag an early reservation and had high... expectations. The space is great, very warm and inviting, overall a nice vibe. We were sat promptly and waited on immediately,off to a good start. They have a wide selection of mozzarella based appetizers, we opted for the bufala - which was excellentbut needed more tomatoes! Next, we each had a pasta dish. The main course took pretty long to come out (+30 min), while theappetizer was prompt (~10 min). The pasta was good, well cooked, but the seasoning was a tad lacking. Finally, we had a smalldessert, the panna cota. It took us a while to even get a dessert menu, and then dessert took even longer (~20 minutes). It waswell worth the wait and was likely the highlight of the meal. Getting the bill was another ordeal; not sure if the wait staff isstretched thin, but the lack of service was a real damper on our meal. Hopefully it was just a fluke. Read more

Had a delicious birthday dinner here - they even personalised a menu to say happy birthday for me!! Everything was so good from... the unique farro arancini to our pasta dishes. I got the squid ink and lobster pasta and it was soooo delicious and worth theextra money wow. My friends got the ravioli and the fazzoletti and they both enjoyed it a lot too.
