Wow! Every aspect of our experience at The Boreal Diner was exceptional. The food was beautifully presented and was so fresh and... flavorful. Our server was capable, pleasant and knowledgeable. The peaceful, relaxed, warm atmosphere drew me in and the foodand service will keep me coming back. I have read a few preposterous reviews here. I think internet trolls have hit therestaurant review circuit. Tourist trap? I am a local and I am happy to be trapped at the Boreal Diner! I am quite confidentthat most tourists will be as well! Someone in our party referred to this restaurant as a true ?diamond in the rough?. While itis true that this ?Rock? of a province is rough, and the Boreal Diner is a true gem, it is not too glittery or pretentious tosit right at home in Bonavista. Is The Boreal pricey? Yes Is it worth it? YES! I'm so glad we went. The Boreal is not just for getting a meal, but it's also... about having an experience. The food is unique & everything was delicious. My husband had Eggplant salad & duck breast. I hadthe Chanterelle tart & Celeriac steak. We enjoyed every bite. The presentation was beautiful, the food was scrumptious & theservice was excellent! Not one negative thing to say about this restaurant. Atmosphere was cute, but we were seated right next to a used book shelf, where people were staring at us as we waited for food.... The service was lacking, with the waiter not filling our water glasses and instead providing a mason jar to fill our own- thisalways tends to drip and is not elegant. We were only provided with a fork and knife, to be used for the entire three coursemeal, which is a bit odd at this price scale. The servers were friendly, but missed details like who ordered what at our tableof two. These details are expected at this type of restaurant. Bread provided to the table was not enough for the long wait forfood, we only got once slice cut in 4 small squares to share.The appetizers were disappointing, my chanterelle tart was ice coldin the centre as if it has been stored in the fridge, and because of this the pastry was rock hard. My wife's scallops wereovercooked and were finished with FAR too much salt to the point I heard her crunching on it loudly. The main dishes were notbetter- my wife's Kimchi noodle bowl was good but not spectacular- cheap places in town make it much better for $12 rather than$36 here. Also if we did not get three courses, the portion size would have been extremely small. The pork belly was completelysoft and chewy. My duck pasta dish was also no better. I got dry duck breast shredded on top of bland pesto pasta that was quitechewy. The parmesan was added beforehand and had no taste. We were not offered pepper, salt or additional parmesan on our maindishes. The desserts had to be the worst of all. My molasses custard pie had no garnish or ice cream, and was bland with a badtexture- it tasted and felt like pumpkin pie without any spices and was most certainly not custard. My wife's green tea-peachcake tasted not of green tea, nor peach. It was quite bland and also was not presented more than being put on a plate. We had heard that this was The Place To Eat in the area and weren't disappointed! The food was wonderful - all so fresh and... prepared beautifully - and we really loved the use of local ingredients (bakeapple mousse and partrigeberry lemon cake were abig hit with us).
