I remember when this restaurant opened up (late 90s). It was direct competition to an established Purple Onion restaurant less... than a block away. Needless to say Al's won. Every visit to Birmingham I have a Gyro combo with an order of mushrooms. Try anorder of mushrooms on any Baker. The food at Al's is a different flavor profile than typical Birmingham cuisine. Place is disgusting. Saw a employee pick a piece of chicken off the floor saw them put it in a box and I asked I know you're... not gonna give that to someone and was told it was none od my business. Then I saw them pick fries and throw them back intothe warmer. I tried to get my money back and was refused my own MONEY back! Read more
Food tasted amazing but the business itself was a disaster. Everything was dirty af. I felt I had to shower after being inside.... If it wasn?t so highly rated I never would?ve eaten there. Hopefully the kitchen is cleaner than the building itself. Read more
Let's be frank - the place is showing its age, truly; and considering the frequent bugs traveling a wagon train across the... outdoor patio, any other place would probably get 2 stars. But I'm giving it 5 bc those things are actually *expected* if youknow anything about Al's. I've been visiting for years and nothing's changed; but that's also the subtle beauty of it,*nothing's changed*... the food is still hot and great and consistently prepared. Ordering - the same. Grabbing a seat outsideand having the food brought to you - the same. The staff, not overly-friendly or excitable but not jerks either, just doing thejob - the same. In fact, considering how much UAB (not to mention this area of the city) has grown and changed (literally)around the place, it's kinda nice to have this nostalgic eatery with convenient, delicious food and familiar scenery to be ableto return to after a lengthy time away.
