Reviews for Gypsy's Trattoria Italiana in Berkeley, CA
As many other reviewers have mentioned, "Gypsy's Trattoria Italiana" is a Berkeley staple! It has consistently been one of the... most affordable Italian restaurants in all of the Bay Area; hell I'd even say in all of California. And considering its not achain restaurant (like Olive Garden or Macaroni Grill), you're getting a unique experience all at a very affordable price thatwon't break the bank. Location-wise, this place is in the heart of Berkeley on Durant Ave with Telegraph Ave being the nearestcross street. This particular area is virtually impossible to find parking so its best to come here by foot, bike, Uber/Lyft, ACTransit, or BART. Furthermore, this is food central where you will find so many unique international restaurants includingIndian, Mexican, Chinese, Thai, and much more. I also wanted to add that this place is within walking distance to UC Berkeleywhich makes this a huge fan favorite for the college crowd. My most recent experience was during the evening of Saturday7/16/2022 at around 6:30pm. As expected, there was a very long line of customers ordering as well as customers waiting to pickup(for to-go and DoorDash orders). One thing to keep in mind, this is NOT a fancy place. Don't expect waiter service, whitetablecloths, or a romantic experience. This is one of those no-frills type of restaurants that focuses more on budget friendlyprices and huge portions. The ordering process is rather simple as you walk up to the register and order. I would recommendtaking cash as credit/debit has slightly higher prices on their food (much like a gas station). After looking at the extensivemenu, I finally settled with their "Shrimp Alla Primavera" dish. This included jumbo shrimp, garlic, assorted vegetables, andtomato sauce with angel hair pasta. In addition to the main entrée, the combo meal special also includes a basic house salad, garlic bread, and soda. The price (as of July 2022) was an unbelievably reasonable $13.74 + tax. Authentic Italian cuisine served at an unbelievably fast fashion. They really have their recipes and prep process really... dialed-in. It's no wonder they have won " Best Italian Cuisine in Berkeley" every single year since they opened 30+ years ago. Ihave been coming here for years and I am never disappointed. They have a great selection of sea-food, beef, chicken andvegetarian dishes. But best of all is their signature sauces, they have the best pesto I've ever had and their gorgonzola sauceis amazing. And every plate served with 1 or 2 pieces of toasted garlic bread. Read more
I ordered the pesto con pollo. The pesto sauce was rich and strong, and there were so much chicken inside! Every serve is big... size, so you?d better share with friends! Btw, the garlic bread was sooo great?omg Read more
The sauce on their crazy Alfredo is interesting--alfredo and red wine sauce. It does come with a lot of chicken and sausage, but... sometimes you just want the real thing, so the sauce was a bit of a surprise. The garlic bread is of course there to absorb theextra sauce that remains after you consume the pasta. Read more
Food tasted great!! I got the godfather special with no pork. It came with a weird piece of garlic bread? I felt strange looking... at it so I removed the garlic and snacked on it anyways. It?s a bit crowded inside because everyone becomes ravenous when theysee Italian food, but I sat outside to eat. Also, the portion felt kinda small to me but maybe it?s because I was hungry? Also, you can?t order online. Edit: I ordered the same thing again recently and the portion felt way bigger than I remember eventhough they look the same. Also, bring your own drinks. A can of soda was over $2. :?( Read more
We?ve ate here twice now. The first time we ordered the Chicken Gnocchi and the Pollo Gorgonzola. Because our meal was really... good the first time we ate here we ordered the exact same two meals again but also ordered in addition to those an EggplantSandwich. Although our meal was still good, we were left a little disappointed because it was not exactly how it was the firsttime we had it; there was less sauce and more grease in comparison and the flavor was not the same. The Eggplant Sandwich wasnot what we were expecting. The sandwich comes open and it is impossible to close it without making a mess. We really enjoyed theflavors of the sauce and cheese, but found the eggplant to be soft (not crispy on the outside), and the bread a bit on the dryside for a sandwich that?s not toasted. The first time we ate here, the restaurant was a solid 5 stars, but the second time itwas more like a 3. Considering the lack of consistency in taste and product of ordered items we are averaging and giving thisrestaurant 4 stars because on a good day the food tastes amazing. Read more
Not bad, but the bread and sauce of it is much better than the noodle and the toppings. I prefer a 3.5.
