Reviews for J.R. Maxwell & Co. in Bath, ME
We enjoyed a tasty dinner last night at JR Maxwell. First time visitors, we would definitely return. Downtown Bath has a lot to... offer and Maxwell's is the prime place to eat. The restaurant's clam chowder lives up to its reputation: creamy and full offresh clams. (It was sufficiently warm, but ipon next visit I'd ask them to serve it hotter). The broiled Haddock was good ....but slightly overcooked. The coleslaw was obviously home made and delicious. Service was attentive and polite and the priceswere reasonable. (Hey, it's 2022, inflation has made money a lot less valuable than it was not too long ago). Overall, it wasan enjoyable meal and dining experience; would strongly recommend. Read more
The oysters were delicious, the fried haddock was not bad but not especially good. The burger was good. While the restaurant... was busy (I understand most restaurants are understaffed now) the staff members were very helpful. This is a great option for arestaurant open later at night. Read more
J.R. Maxwell & Co. : ?Famous French onion soup.? I have been going to restaurants and ordering French onion soup whenever I... could, but never rated them online. The ?famous? French onion soup is one of the best I have ever had. A nice amount of sweetsoft onions that you got with every scoop. The cheese was a perfect blend of cheese, stringy but not to stringy to the pointwhere it all comes of, and soft soaked bread at the bottom. All together, the flavors blended together marvelously. A Frenchonion soup worthy of fame. Read more
Quiet restaurant in the heart of Bath. Great service. I had the Fish & Chips; amazing! Especially the fish. My wife ordered... Haddock with coleslaw. The slaw was very good, the Haddock lacked flavor... could've used a bit more seasoning. Would definitelyreturn. Read more

First time visiting and I think we got in right before the dinner crowd. I loved the atmosphere of this restaurant and the menu... offered enough variety we both found something we liked. We were offered water and bread while we looked over the menu. TheBlueberry Martini was amazing! Read more
Come to Bath for the gorgeous town and stay for the amazing food! We had the best meal of our entire trip at Maxwell. I was... itching for some clam chowder and this stuff did not disappoint. It's creamy and smooth with delicious chunks of yummy. I gotthe haddock with amaretto lobster cream sauce. You can see the large chunks of lobster meat and the sauce was fresh andamazing. Kid #1 got "the best Reuben he's ever eaten" and kid#2 devoured his entire plate of fish n chips. As I've statedbefore, being from Rochester NY we know good fish fry so this is really saying something. We were dying to try the Indianpudding but sadly had no room in the bellies. Service was friendly and the dining room was lovely. We'll be back for thatIndian pudding as soon as we can! Read more
A neat little pub and eatery in downtown Bath ME, stopped in for some local seafood flavor. This place has some history for... sure, with atmosphere and decor to match. Appreciate the effort from the only waitress in the place, she tried... not surewhat's wrong with people these days with nobody wanting to work. Started with a mixed greens salad and a cup of lobster soup. The soup wasn't bad but was really thin, I'm used to a bisque style with a heavier base. It did have some large lobster portionswithin. The stuffed haddock wasn't as good as expected, sauce was a little much and was baked until the edges were tough. Itseemed to be standing in it own juices which is typically absorbed by the stuffing that was almost non existent. The cornmealbreading on the fish was different, not experienced that before and would vote to scrap that idea. I'll definately try somthingelse if I make it back there. Neat place but wasn't impressed with my side of the table. However the captains platter acrossfrom me looked much better with a pile of fried haddock, clams and scallops. Read more
