Have not been here on years. Was clean, beautifully furnished and neat. Staff were friendly and courteous. Some of the food... items were a little salty for my taste, the fried okra, but overall was a nice experience. Multiple selections, something foreveryone. And we must talk about the amazing desserts and PIES!! Pie boxes were leaving faster than they could be filled withall of the scrumptiousness!! Enjoy!!!! Read more

J&S a great place to smell a person's halitosis, or flatulence, body odor, or nasty perfume! There isn't even a hint of social... distance! The pandemic is over,yes but I didn't like someone in my space b4, still don't! I think if you're within reach...youshould be legal for a jab, an uppercut, or a big old roundhouse! In the past 20 years or so, it's gotten tough to find a cafeteria of any quality operating outside of a public school or... hospital, but I'm happy to have found this place while visiting Asheville. I'm a connoisseur of old school cafeteria dining,having eaten at Gray Bros. outside Indianapolis, the last operating Morrison's (Mobile, AL), Mehlman's (St. Clairsville, OH)S&S, K&W, MCL, and Piccadilly in the past few years, and I can confidently say that J&S in Asheville is among the best. You canjudge a cafeteria by the quality of its mac and cheese, and the macaroni and J&S is pleasantly creamy, flavorful, and has theperfect amount of crunch from the crisped layer of cheese on top. You'll find the remainder of the menu of classic southerncomfort food to be of similar quality. You'd be hard pressed to find a better cafeteria dining experience anywhere in America. Read more

The food was pretty good here, although some portions could have been better. Like I got three slices of beets. As a vegetarian... not ordering a meat entree, it could have been a little more. My family really enjoyed their fried fish. All the employees werevery friendly other than we never were checked on by the woman in the dining room. So we went to the nearby McDonald's to get aniced tea afterwards. Read more
